last-minute scheduling confl ict
Saturday’s Grande Ronde Ducks
Unlimited Banquet has moved
to a new location. The event will
take place at the Gilbert Center
on the Eastern Oregon University
campus. Doors open at 5 p.m. Oct.
19. The evening includes a live
and silent auction and raffl es.
Prizes this year include a three-
day Argentina dove hunt for four
people, a Cast and Blast Adven-
ture on the Henry’s Fork in East-
ern Idaho, quality fi rearms and
getaway packages. In addition,
all Greenwings (younger than 17)
will be entered into a raffl e for
their choice of prizes. The family-
friendly event will be catered by
Cock ’n’ Bull and the bar supplied
by Benchwarmers. Very limited

Meet will be held on the eastern

meat shoot Oct. 20 at the club-

JOSEPH — Stanlynn Daugherty,
who for several years trekked the
Wallowas with llamas and tourists
from around the world, went on her
own international journey last year,
and on Oct. 22 she will bring it to the
Josephy Center’s Brown Bag. “Meer-
kats and Cheetahs and Rhinos, Oh
My!” begins at noon. Daugherty
describes her talks as “a journey into
my life as an African wildlife sanctu-
ary and research station volunteer
last February in Namibia.” Brown

She taught fi rst grade in
Wallowa and later taught
special education at Groner
Elementary in Hillsboro.
Beverly enjoyed owning an
escrow collections company,
bowling, golfi ng and scuba
diving. She was a member
of the Credit Women’s As-
sociations, OEA and NEA.
She would say her greatest
achievement was raising her
daughters, Toni and Carol
Ann.
Surviving relatives
include her daughters,
Toni Ledridge and spouse,
Carey Lewis, of Richland,
Washington, and Carol
Rosecrans of La Grande;
brother and spouse, Arden
and Frances Collins of
Portland; and two grand-
children and fi ve great-
grandchildren.

Education offered to
explain Tenant Protection
Bill
LA GRANDE — The Oregon
Rental Housing Association is host-
ing an informational meeting for
tenants and landlords on Senate
Bill 608, the Tenant Protection Bill.
This bill substantially alters the
relationship between tenants and
landlords and is causing confusion
and uncertainty among both parties.
Because the bill is complex and has
high penalties for landlord error,
education is recommended for all
tenants and landlords.
Two sessions will be offered
Oct. 25 at the Union County Senior
Center, 1504 N. Albany St., La
Grande: from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and
again from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

pumpkin contest
LA GRANDE — All ages are
invited to submit carved or decorated
pumpkins in a downtown “Ghostly
Creation” contest beginning Oct. 25.
The pumpkins will be put on display
at Market Place Fresh Foods and Le
Bebe Cakes Bakery for the public
to vote on. Winners will be selected
on Halloween in two age categories:
up to 12 years, and age 13 through

LG School Board meets
for work, executive
sessions
LA GRANDE — The Board of
Directors of the La Grande School
District will convene for a special
board meeting work session followed
by an executive session Oct. 23 at the
Willow School, 1305 N. Willow St.
The work session begins at 7 p.m. in
the gymnasium and will include the
superintendent’s Student Success
Act report with recommendations.
The executive session will follow in
the Superintendent’s Office, pursu-

Burton Hill
November 17, 1922 - October 6, 2019
Burton Hill passed away October 6, 2019
in Shelley, Idaho. He was born November
17, 1922 at the home of his grandparents,
Marion and Bertha Woodruff, in Tremonton,
Utah. He was the 4th of 7 children born to
his parents Joseph Orla and Mamie Woodruff
Hill. He grew up in Bear River City, Utah on
a farm where he learned to work and enjoy it.
They worked the land with teams of horses.
After morning chores, he ran 2-miles to
school crossing fields and leaping over barbed
wire fences. He was always very fit for his
age.
Graduating from high school in 1941, he
enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served
for the duration of WWII. In 1944, he was
deployed to England. He flew 34 combat
missions over Germany as top turret gunner
and flight engineer in B-17 bombers.
Returning from the war, he married his
high school sweetheart, Ilene Cutler. They
were married in the Logan Temple, on June
22, 1945, in a joint ceremony with his brother,
Ralph, and his sweetheart, Miriam Carter.
Following his discharge from the service,
Burton and Ilene moved to Cove, Oregon
where they purchased a farm. They taught
their young children to do chores and were
very involved in 4-H clubs where Burton and
Ilene were often the leaders.
Burton took on other work primarily in
the sawmill industry. He became a mill-
wright and helped with construction of a new
state-of-the art mill for the Fir Pine Lumber
Company. In 1960, the Boise Cascade Corpo-
ration purchased Fir Pine Lumber, shutting
down the mill and liquidating the equipment.
Burton worked for the liquidators and was
able to purchase the property. The Hill family
moved to LaGrande, keeping their property
in Cove.
Burton was employed as an electrician
by Union Pacific Railroad. In 1970, he was
promoted to Electrical Supervisor for the
Idaho Division. This involved a move to
Pocatello, Idaho where he and Ilene lived for
11 years, at which point they returned back
to the Grande Ronde Valley and their farm in
Oregon, where Burt retired from the railroad
in 1985.
Rather than use his full name, he was
quite often called Burt or B.J. Hill. Through-
out his life Burt was active and busy in his
church. He served in several bishoprics and
in scouting during his career and afterward,

and he and Ilene served as senior missionar-
ies to Wallowa County.
He appreciated his pioneer heritage and
being a great grandson of the prophet Wil-
ford Woodruff. He was a “gentleman farmer”
and was well-known for his skill on his John
Deere tractor/backhoe which he used to help
others in the community. His hardy work
ethic and example of service has been an
inspiration to everyone.
Burton is preceded in death by his wife,
Ilene, his parents and all his siblings, 2
grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He is
survived by 3 sister-in-laws and all of his chil-
dren; Alan (Renee) Hill of Bountiful, Utah;
Richard (Kerma) Hill of Blackfoot, Idaho;
Clair (Nancy) Hill of Shelley, Idaho; Kathleen
(Kent) Kunz of Boise, Idaho; Jennie (Von)
Loveland of Boise, Idaho; and Ben (Laura)
Hill of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Burt and Ilene celebrated their 74th an-
niversary in Cove, Oregon this last summer.
They had 37 grandchildren and currently
have 108 great grandchildren. He was a won-
derful father and grandfather.
Funeral Services will be held at the LDS
Stake Center Chapel, 1802 Gekeler Lane,
LaGrande, Oregon at 11am, on Saturday,
October 19, 2019. There will be viewing
beforehand from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the same
location. Following the funeral there will be a
graveside service at the Cove City Cemetery.
