Hutchinson said he and a
co-worker have been check-
ing some notorious breeding
sites for the past week or so,
looking for larvae.
They apply products,
sometimes from the ground
and occasionally from the
air, that kill larvae before
they hatch into adults that

If there’s anything mos-
quitoes need more than
blood it’s water, and Baker
County is pretty soggy this
spring.
This has Matt Hutchinson
worried.
Hutchinson is starting his
seventh season as the area’s
chief mosquito killer, and
he’s bracing for an active
stretch.
“I’m preparing for a busy
season — busier than last
year,” Hutchinson said
Tuesday afternoon.
The 2018 season started
relatively fast but it ended
slow, mainly due to the
severe drought that dried
some of the water sources
where mosquitoes lay their
eggs, said Hutchinson, who
manages the 200,000-acre
Baker Valley Vector Control
District.
He’s responsible for deal-
ing with mosquitoes in the
property tax-funded dis-
trict, which includes much
of Baker Valley (including
Baker City) as well as Bowen
and Keating valleys.
But 2019 much more
resembles 2017, when the
melted remnants of a heavy

he was attending commu-
nity college in Arkansas as a
nontraditional student, hav-
ing worked and served in the
military after high school.
He said he was struggling
with math and was told he
should try out SSS. The pro-
gram set him up with a math
tutor.
“That tutor was really
great, really kind and he
kind of helped me through,”
he said.
Williams excelled in
school and transferred to
the University of Arkansas,
where he received an un-
dergraduate degree and a
master’s degree in science
education. He also received
a degree in community col-
lege teaching.
Williams said he quickly
became a tutor himself
through SSS in Arkansas in
many subjects — including
math.
“Once I started out being a
tutor with SSS, I never left,”
he said.
Berenice Chavez Meraz is
a senior at EOU studying art
and anthropology. She said
SSS has been instrumental
in her success in school.
“Now that I’ve come to col-
lege and I’m in TRIO, I can’t
picture my college experi-
ence without it,” she said.
Chavez Meraz said the
tutoring and seminars were
extremely helpful, but the
thing that helped her the
most was having someone
to talk to.
“Yes, we have our profes-
sors who we can also go to for
advice, but they can get really
busy. So the fact that we have
these people who we can go
to for advice and mental sup-
port and to talk to almost like
counselors is just really nice.
They always have their door
open,” she said.
Williams said he helps
students through so many

that there is no such thing as
a typical day for him. He said
students come in sometimes
and just need to cry, while
others need someone to cel-
ebrate their successes with.
He said sometimes stu-
dents lack the emotional
support they crave simply
because their parents don’t
understand what their
achievements mean, hav-
ing never attended college
themselves.
“(When they tell their par-
ents) ‘I made the dean’s list,’
it doesn’t necessarily reso-
nate with them, so we can
celebrate that with them,”
Williams said.
Chavez Meraz said she
spends time in the SSS room
on campus every single day,
whether she has to study or
not. She said she just enjoys
being around other students
in the program.
“We all automatically con-
nect. (We) can just talk and
are friends because we all
know we ... had some kind of
challenge and now we’re all
here just trying to support
each other,” she said.

applying to the SSS program
