Michael was born Aug. 16, 1959, in Rose- burg, to Ray and Etna (Joiner) Van Meter. He graduated from Eastern Ore- gon University, where he stud- ied English and education. Michael had a distinguished career in print, working at The Observer, The Daily Record (Ellensburg, Washington), The (Bend) Bulletin and oth- er publications. He also had experience in radio journal- ism (KLCC). He won several awards for his work, includ- ➚➪➶ ➹➘➴➷➬➮➱✃❐❒ ✃❮✃➘❰➴ ÏÐ➘ education reporting, in-depth news and feature writing. Michael taught journalism and writing at Central Oregon Community College from 2003 to 2018 and served as adviser to the student news- paper, The Broadside. Stu- dents and colleagues appre- ciated his gentle nature, wit and storytelling skills as well as his commitment to creat- ing a supportive, challeng- ing learning environment. In addition to his work as a journalist and educator, Mi- chael served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Bend. Friends and family will remember Michael’s smile and his warm, funny, compassionate, some- times irreverent presence. He appreciated and things in life — relation- ships, people, good stories, good beer and the outdoors.
