Observer, La Grand, Ore., Ike's Secret Service Fears Leftist Trouble By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Staff Writer Hut - headed martyrs: . Despite seeming- official deter mination to qo ahead with Presi dent Eisenhower's visit to Japan and despite vast security arrange ments, anxiety persists in Tokyo that some untoward event may take place. One fear is that hot headed demonstrators may force Secret Service men accompanying the President to take some dras tic protective step. Many of the fanatic students who have been demonstrating against the V. S. Japan mutual security treaty would like to become martyrs, and should such an etcnt occur, the left-wingers would seize on the issue with a vengeance. Test at the polls: Japanese Socialist leaders claim that the majority of the Japanese people are against ratification of the U.S. Japan treaty but they are not yet ready to take their fight against Premier Nobusuke Kishi's government. The reason: Voters may not see eye to eye with them on "other issues." - Talkfest: . Western diplomats in London now expect the Geneva disarma ment talks to stretch out longer than had been expected right aft er the summit fiasco. Although the West does not like Nikita Khrushchev's latest disarmament proposals, they contain tnough concessions to compel the West to sit down and talk about them instead of turning them down cold. Cold shoulder: The United States and Britain will politely turn down French President Charles de Gaulle's re newed call for a three power LEGAL NOTICE RTMOPlMa OK ASM l. HI ATT. Britain and France to dictate the policies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO I . The U. S. and Britain are telling De Gaulle that they are anxious for close consultation with him on all major lnternation al problems, but not at the ex pense of other NATO members, in. eluding West Germany and Italy. Do Gaulle, meanxhile, will press his drive to put France as rear as possible on an equal nu clear footing with the U.S., Kussia and Britain. The failure of the summit conference strengthened his determination, and now he also hopes that Washington will come through with the know-how France needs to catch up quickly. Political football: The U.S. 12 spy planes based at Atsugi Naval Air Station in Japan have become a big political football and both foreign and Jap anese reporters have tried to see the plane. But. it was learned not even the two top Navy ad mirals in Japan have clearance to enter the restricted area where the planes are kept Relatives Attend Tucker Funeral Relatives here attended the funeral of George E. Tucker, 64, services being held recently at uernusion. Survivors include Collins Tuck er, a son, and Mrs Allene Shaf tr, daughter, both of La Grande; Mrs Georgia Lampkins, Cove, a diiughter; the widow, Mrs Kath- rn Tucker, McNary; two other daughters, three sisters and 17 grandchildren.
