Whatever happens, though, a Northwest team will be crowned champion of the tourney. Oregon, Oregon State, Wash ington State and Idaho all turned in first round wins Saturday. Oregon State was a 54-50 winner over New Mexico State: Oregon blasted Denver's Pioneers 66-49; Washington State took the meas ure of Hawaii 71-45 and Idaho avenged an early season loss ot the hands of Portland by beating the Pilots. 63-45. Action tonight in the champion ship brackets sees Oregon State testing Idaho in the first game and Oregon meeting the tough Washington State Cougars. In consolation Hay this after noon Portland met New Mexico State and in the second game Denver played Hawaii. Only we game Saturday was close and that was the first game of the tournament between OSC and New Mexico State. The Giants had been successful in keeping Unitas from complet ing vital third down passes when the Colts needed eight or 15 yards to keep rolling. But as the final period began, l'nitas hit Iterry for a 17-ya'd gain on a tnirn-anu-eight situation. Then Moore, who had teamed with l'nitas to pro duce a touchdown on a 60-yard perfect play in the opening min utes, took a pass from l'nitas on the New York 40. broke loose from nosey Gricr and rai to the New York 13.
