Georgia Ttch By OAVID M. MOFFIT United Prest International ATLANTA (UPI Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets take their poorest won-lost record in 14 bowl appearances against Arkansas in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville. Fla.. Jan. 2 but Arkansas root ers should beware because that record is deceptive. This is not a great team by Tech standards. But, it's a team that capitalizes on opponents' mistakes and, given an opportu nity, can beat just about anybody. The Yellow Jackets won six games and lost four this past season. They beat Kentucky, Scut hern Methodist, Clcmson. Tennessee, Tulane and Notre Dame by margins ranging from two to 10 points. They lost to Auburn, Duke, Alabama and Georgia by a combined total of 13 points. ... .i Trailed At Halftime "J ' In the regular season finale against Orange Rowl - bound. Southeastern Conference cham pion Georgia, Tech trailed 21-0 at halftime yet came roaring back after the intermission and almost pulled the game out of the fire. Tech lost 21-14 but missed two other touchdowns on a dropped pass in the end zone and a back U.S. Woman's Bowling Champ Aware Of Role As Housewife (Reg. U.S. Pat. OH.) - By JACK CUDDY United Press International NEW YORK UPI Brown haired, blue-eyed Olga Gloor of Norwood Park, 111., is one house wife who doesn't advise saving steps. - In tact, visa she's rr.ore of a stepper at 39 than she was at 29 and advises other gals to be likewise. What's your profession'" a re porter asked hopefully. I'm a married woman and a housewife and a professional bowler," she replied proudly. "That's nice," said the report er, politely disguising his disap pointment. "You earn your own pin money, huh?" "I do all right. In fact I won the world's invitation match-game title last Friday at Chicago. The women"? world individual cham pionship!'1 Exudes Triumph Five-foot-five Olga said it in the modest, self-effacing tone which might be used by an exultant deb utante announcing to other hun tresses at a soiree that Philip Pasturepile had finally popped the big question and. presented the finger ice. Man! She exuded tri umph. - - .. ' What are you doing in New York?': "I'm here to start a national lecturing and instruction tour for the American Machine and Foun dry Co. next month just get ting ready now." - What's this talk about your being more of a stepper now than you were before" the writer asked. - ' ' nI used to take only three ,steps and now I take four." "Is that goDd'" Olga explained that four steps are a "must" for a bowler as he approaches the foul line to de liver the ball down the alley. Only by using the slower four-step ap proach can Either a man or a woman ever hope to become a really big time player, she said. ' Learnt Hard Woy "I 'learned that the hard 'way." she Continued. This sort of play "was typical of Georgia Tech all season win or lose; Only In a 16-6 victory over Bluebonnet Bowl-bound, Atlantic Coast' 'Conference champ Clemson was' a final result assured before the final gun. This' was a Tech team that was hampefed throughout the season by injuries. At one point,, four of the top five halfbacks were on the bench. ''And, in the losses to Ala-bafiia-and Georgia in the last two games of the season, the Yel low Jackets had offensive quar terback Ered Braselton shelved with a shoulder injury. Has Versatile Attack At full strength. Georgia Tech has a versatile attack. The Jack ets are especially dangerous out side with their speed. With Bras elton available to keep the Arkan sas defense honest, Tech's run ning game will be hard to stop. Billy Williamson, Floyd Faucette, Chick Granning and Frank Nix head up what is probably the deepest' halfback corps m-4he South. ' ' '! The Georgia Tech defense. sparked by i America center Maxie Baughan, is big and rug- gtxt. Tech Coach Bobby Dodd is known for his ability to prepare his team for big games. This is his ninth Tech team to be invited to a post-season bowl and he hasn t lost one yet. Corps. I found it fun and a chal lenge. I got pointers from my friends and develop?d my own style . without ever learning the fundamentals. Bowling six years like that, I got so I could aver age around 178 but I couldn't get any higher. "I -finally went to a very good instructor, Paul Krumske. He had me change my style radically. I had to start all over again, with four st ens. and with a lighter 14-pourd- ball instead of my Im pounder, in order to get proper rhythm and the smooth, gliding contact, of the ball on the alley not the throwing drop I used to give it." Later,' after she had improved her stylo, she returned to the heavier ball and she has been bowling in the high 180 s ever since. She said she had an aver age of "almost 200" during the 32-game finals of the tourney in which z'..e beat out 64 contestants last week.
