MEATY SITUATION Beef production in the U.S. has just doubled in the pastel)
year's, ronofis the DcDartment of Acricultme. Suruiisiiitlv. on y half this increase
is due to creator number of cattle. The other half is the result of greater productivi
ty more' meat per head. That means Americans now eat more beef even though
lierd increases have only kept pace with population growth. As chart, at left, shows,
a growing percentage of slaughter cattle are beeves, rather than lighter dairy cattle.
They're also raised faster than before. Chart, right, reveals that dressed weight of
cattle has been upped an average of 80 pounds.

WASHINGTON A large
majority of American families
practice some form of birth con
Irol.
That fact has long been obvious
from the U.S. birth rate, which
consistently remains far below
the biological maximum. It has
been confirmed by study ctnduct
ed jointly by the Uiivprsily of
Michigan research center ond the
Scripps foundation for population
research.
The researchers interviewed 2.
713 white married women be
tween the ages of 18 and 39. Kx
ce;.t for the fact that .io Negroes
! were included, the women inter'
viewed were a sciennfically-se

population, with all religious
groups and economic brackets in

The findings, recently pub

The initial question was so
worded that all forms of birth
control including Hie "rhythm
method" approved by (he Catholic
Church were included.
The researchers then asked
about the methods of birth (Con
trol used. v
They found that standard con
traceptive devices were used, oc
casionally or exclusively, by 89
per cent of the Protestants and
96 per cent of the Jews who
practice birth control.
While the rhythm method was
most widely used among Catholic
wives, the research team said
that a "very significant" percent
age of Catholics acknowledge
regular or occasional use ot con
traceptives. The number who ad
milled using methods condemned
by their church constituted 30 per

President Kichard M. Nixon can
be expected to limit his I960

This judgment came today from
a well-posted informant, who said
Nixon would be too busy in Wash

ously consider entering all state
primaries. .
Can Record Preference
Fifteen states and the District
of C'lumbia now have laws of
various types to allow voters it) a
primary election to record their
preference among candidates for
the presidential nomination of
their party.
Nixon was exiiected to be en
tered in the June 7 primary in
his home state of California and
in the May 20 primary to Ore
gon, where a new state law will
put all major contenders in both
parties on the ballots.
Depending in pat on Rockcfel
ler's moves, the New Hampshire
primary March S and the Wis
consin primary April 5 and possi
bly one or two other states were
listed as likely places for pre
convention campaigns by Nixon.
Organisations Set Up
Supporters of loth Nixon aid
R'rckelcllcr al'cady have set up
campaign organizatio is in New
Hampshire, which holds the na
tion's first presidential primary.
Wisconsin, which holds the second,
also is a probable spot for a con
test between the two contenders.

of the GOP organization leaders
leaning heavily to Nixon. Hoeke

of tlif, federal law
has been invalidated by a famltl
court decision rendered by Jug
Learned Hand "in 1936. All but
two of the slate laws have been
repealed. Connecticut and Massa

The Massachusetts law permits
iruggists to sell appliances "for
the prevention of disease' and
the state officially closes its eyes
to the fact that these appliances
can also be used to prevent -con

In Connecticut, however, .the
law forbids even "the use of i a

this law makes the citizens of
Connecticut "the largest mass
