Greek Orthodox Priest Now President Of By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Staff Writer A black-bearded priest of the Greek Orthodox Church becomes the newly-elected president of a newly-born state on Sunday (Dec. 13. He is Archbishop Maka'ios II. The new state is Cyprus, an is land about the size of New Jer sey containing approximately a half million people of whom four fifths are cf Greek origin. The new vice president will be Fazil Katchuk, a man of Turkish origin. The constitution of the new re public provides that the president be Greek, the vice president Guild To Hold Holiday Party The Rev. Louis M. Samson will use "The Imperatives of Jesus" as his sermon topic at th? First Presbyterian Church Sunday morning. The choir will sing "Clear and Calm Was That Holy Night" by Nikolsky and "And the Glory of the Lord" by Handel. Mrs. Jack Vedder will play "Pas toralfe" by Bach, for an organ pre lude. The Pastor will hold his last class on Sunday afternoon for those who are uniting with the Church during the Christinas season. The class will be held in Richardson parlor at 3 p.m. Westminster Guild will hold a meeting and Christmas party at the Manse. Monday at 7:30 p.m. with a program. Mrs. George Har ris and Mrs. Howard Petersen, co chairmen. Mrs. Ailccn McDonald is chairman of the hostess com mittee. The Mariners' Club will hold a potluck at the church Friday eve ning and will decorate following dinner. Invitations are extended to all church families. Dec. 19, Santa Claus will come to the church basement with treats for the nursery, kindergar ten and primary departments. A general practice for the church school program at 2 p.m. Junior High Fellowship will meet Thursday, to make favors to give shut-ins as the group carols Dec. 20 following the Christmas program. Its most recent history of vio lence began with demands of the Greek majority for "enosis" (un ion' with Greece, a proposal vio lently opposed by the Turkish minority, as well as by Turkey. In the resulting dispute, involv ing Britain, Greece and Turkey in addition to Cyprus itself, Ma karios became the political fire brand and a man named Col. Hundreds were killed and thou sands wounded in the fighting which raged with no holds barred fcr the next four years, and the scars still run deep. Greece aid Turkey, allies in NATO, came to the verge of war. Greek and Tu'kish Cypriot bat tled each other and outrages against' each still burn in mem ory. Early this year. Britain, Tur key and Greece, with Makarios sitting in for the Cypriots, agreed that Cyprus should become an in dependent state. It was an agreement satisfac tory to no one. Methodist Choir To Sing Classic Sunday Evening The Christmas section of the famous Oratorio 'The Messiah" by George Frederick Handel, will be presented by the chancel choir of the First Methodist Church on the evening of Dec. 13 at 7:30. Soloists for this performance will be Mrs. Richard Cyr, soprano, Mrs. Donald Ainsworth and Miss Lee Miller, contraltos; David Skeen, bass. Our special guest ioloist will be Howard Anderson, ienor, who has established a fine eputation by his splendid sing ing in 'our area. Pasadena, a private school. said tuitions were raised from RH to $1,275 in September and the teaching staff was granted a general pay boost during the year The University of California with nine campuses throughout the state, reported a $50 raise in uition for out of state students rtie university was not planning '0 increase salaries.
