Peggy is the cutie who climbs
into ridiculous costumes, spouts
off-teat lines aid ri'ks life and
limb for laughs.
"We've only been on this ir
four weeks" the brunette said,
"and Krnie's drea nel in s;me
of the darndes stunts I've ever
seel. So far, I've worn a blonde
fright wigunderwator. ii Indiai
squaw outfit, none 'sailing'
through the air on a magic car
pet and other weird stums.
"Kvcn on normal nights I have
to change costumes six o" seven
times to give c!ue3 to the panel."
Normally. Peggy is a singer,
but as Kovac's girl Friday on
ABC-TV's "Take A Cood Look."
she has hasl only one opportunity
to exercise her pipes.
Show li Fixed
"That was last week." she
grimaced, "and I had to sing

Hair' off-key. H was followe-1
by ai off-stase gunshot. That's
how bad it was."
lJeggy cheerfully admits the
show is fixed for laughs.
"It's r.ot so much a panel show
as it is a comedy program," she
explained. "The idea is to make
the panel look as stupid as pos
sible, which Ernie is very good
at doing.
"Not long ago his wife, Edie
Adams, was a panelist, ami Ernie
told her, 'You're great with the
pots and pans at home, but as
a panelist you're nothing. You
eight to get out of show busi
ness'." There's nothing easy about get
ling laughs when you're a pretty
but I'eggy, who's married to
comedian Dick Martin of the
Rowan and Martin comedy learn,
is learning last.
"The more attractive a girl is,
the harder it is to be funny. The
scripts and sketches have to be
as humorous as possible." she
said. "I never know what Ernie
will have me doing from week
to week.
Playing Comedy Thrilling
"In a way It's thrilling for me
to play comedy. Before I joined
the show i was forced to rely on
my voice and face.
"I've always been a secret nut.
but I've had to keep my sense
of humor hidden. Now I can be
as cray as ! want. I realize, of
course, that it takes years to learn
timing and other elements of
come'Jy. But I'm going to keep
trying."
The first -eal laugh Peggy ever
collected occurred a few years
back while on a date with rra.iK
Sinatra. When asked who his
companion was, Sinatra intro
duced her to one and all as Kz
zurd Charles.
"I'm still trying to live that
down," Peggy sighed.

Eisenhower is preaching the gos
pel of friendship and understand
ing inside American embassies on
his ll -nation tour, besides dwell
ing on the same theme in public,.
Eisenhower apparently feels
U.S. employes abroad could make
more of an effort to understand
and appreciate local culture and
customs.
He was particularly emphatic
on this subject in talking to mem
bers of the embassy staff in
Karachi, Pakistan earlier this
week.

a night. The people who work for
him get up much earlier than he

The problems of existence be
come quite painful at times. The
most frequent complaint is lack
of sleep.
Hagerty asked mournfully the
other morning in Ankara, Turkey.
"I wonder how long a human
being can go without any sleep
at all?" Hagerty had a good

The night Eisenhower was in
Turkey the communique on his
conversations with President
Celal Bayar was issued a few
minutes befcre 2 a.m. It was 3
o'clock before Hagerty got to bed
and he had to be up again by
6 a.m. to dress and get to the
quarters where Ike was staying
in time for departure ceremonies.
Most members of the Eisen
hower travel party virtually col
lapsed the first night in Karachi
because they were sj weary from
sleepless stops in Home and
Ankara.
As soon as the President turned
in that night at the residence of
Pakistan President Ayub Khan,
the Ike staff rae?d to bed.
