The- lanky, graying star crossed
his stork-like legs in the den oi
his living room and calmy dis
agreed with his peers, saying, "1
think television is good for my
movie career.
A Subtl Reminder
"My old pictures on TV help
out too. If it's done correctly, an
actor's TV appearances can tie in
with the release dates of his mov
ies. When I appear in a dramatic
show it's a whole lot better than
playing guest.. star on a variety
show to plug my latest film.
"The public is on to that sort of
thing, and it is more detrimental
than beneficial.
"When you're acting in a sfery
on TV it is a subtle reminder to
the public that you are still
around and working. That's why
I accept TV programs from time
to time throughout the year."
Stewart's next video appearance
is Dec. 15 when he stars with
George Gobel in an hour-long
spoof on westerns, "Cindy's Fella"
'Ford Startime).
Looks For Quality
Though he goes along with oc
casional TV programs, the movie
veteran won't consider a regular
series. His agent is instructed to

a series would destroy his picture

"Funny thing happened recent
ly, Jimmy went on in his com

wife, Gloria, we had thre "lid
offers for a husband-and-wife pro

was very good."
Jimmy looks for quality in his

"1 like it as well as anything
I've done," Jimmy said. "I think
audiences will approve of the
show, too."

Mars Moons Are 'Artificial'
NEW YORK (UPI) The imagination-staggering
theory of a
Russian physicist that the two
moons of Mars are artificial has
been convincingly pooh-poohed by
the distinguished American as
tronomer who was one of the dis
coverers of the planet Pluto-.
But anyone who enjoys having
a staggered imagination can keep
on having one. To disprove the
Russian theory factually requires
a landing on a Martian moon
which isn't in the cards for any
time soon. And its author, Dr. I.
S. Shklovsky has some impressive
technical evidence to back it.
He met its implications head
on. If the Martian moons are not
natural, then somebody put them
into the Martian sky. It had to
have been done a long time ago"
because if Mars now supports
life, it is the lowest kir.d of veg
etable life.
Shklovsky suggested it was done
two or three thousand millions
years ago when, he said, a "high
ly developed civilization" may
have existed on Mars. He granted

based on the mathematic proof
that Phobos, the moon closest to
Mars, is very slowly sinking to
ward the planot (and according
to the calculations of Dr. Fred
Whipple will crash into it about
60,000,000 yea-s from now.)
This is the same thing which
happens to earth's artitical sat
ellites. Shklovsky examined var
ious natural explanations for Pho
bos' sinking behavior and reject
ed them, which left only the ex
planation that Phobos' density is
very slight for its size. This
means "we have to assume Pho
bos is hollow inside," he said. No
natural celestial body can be hol
low; therefore. Mar's moons are
artificial.
ToYnbaugh said there was one
other explanation for Phobos'
slow sinking which Shklovsky
hadn't considered. Mars' orbit is
being crossed constantly by the
very small planets called Aster
oids and through the vast stretch
of cosmic time has been hit by
them mn,iy times, ho argued.
