Millions Of Write Each By FRANK ELEAZER UPI Staff Writer WASHINGTON U'l'D The Senate finally has oHMied its pay rolls to public inspection, and the wonder of it all is who gets out ;iM these millions of letters the senators annually commit to the mails. From the way the Senate's 66 private postmen have been sweat ing you would exix-et to find every senator's office crammed with typists and stenographers. The published payrolls disclose these offices to be crowded, nil right, but mostly by administra tive assistants at salaries up to $lfi.2.W a year, and, at lesser pay, personal secretaries, legisla tive assistants, receptionists, and executive assistants. Also, as you already have read, the senators in some caes em ploy wives, daughters, and in laws, with various appropriate ti tles. But Menus and lyrists? Senator Lists Typists Well, one senator listed three of the lew lemai'ling typists to be found in (lie Se.iate office build ings. Hut I bet they don't have time to he loiiesoin.'. His other staffers total i. including a state let resintative. a research staff assi.-lant. a departmental assist ant, a di.iarlme-itai secretary, a state reiiort and press clerk, a de pa! t mental correspondence secre tary, an immigration secretary, and a research and information I he La Grande Observer, Observer, La Grande, Ore., Thurt., Dec. 3, 1959 Page 12 Side Glances ',.v 1-1 ..0 t 1 ( 'I'll say one thing for that young man. C'h' islmas who works for Vice President Hichord M. Nixon. House members, whose payrolls haven't been secret in yenrs, hire nothing but clerks. Senators also used to get by mostly with the assistance of clerks and tonic still do. But after the Senate had voted this year lo let the taxpay ers see whom it hired and for how much, some members got lo thinking a tftle of clerk might not appear to the homefplks appropri ate for a fellow drawing maybe $13.00(1 a year. Senator's Assistant Assisted Anyway, we came up with of fice managers, research assist ants, plus others. A possible landmark was an as sistant legislative 'assistant listed by one senator. . The Senate's operations call fo." a secretary at J19.2IH.U2. an as sistant secretary at 57.0MI :i2, and a:i assistant secretary to the .sec retary, also at $7,0'i.32. The sergeant at arms acts also as doorkeeper, which helps make him worth $ia.24'J.!)2 yearly. It takes iu a:ly 15 pi il d p. ges to list his employes, including a Few Kind Words On Shooting Of Canine A La Grandi do" owner yester day had a feu kind words about the person who threw scalding water on her 11-year-old dog and then shot the pet with a BTS gun.
