Players lined up 10 to 15-deep all day to get a chance at the blackjack-like game, and the house slowly whittled its losses down to about $200,000 by the end of the first 24 hours. Remine scent Of Past The loss was reminescent of the day the desert resort hotel opened in December, 1952. The house lost $215,000 the first night. But a Sands spokesman said: "We're not too worried. We think things will average out by the end of the year." Biggest winner in the game was and unidentified Texan who pocket ed $172,000. A woman who gave her name as Marie Graguaud of Paris also was among the big win ners. There were an estimated 70 gamblers still waiting to get a shot at the game at midnight. Singer Frank Sinatra, part own er of the hotel, was credited with getting the game brought here after having seen it played in France The game which was originat ed in Oreece is played by 12 players, a house dealer and a house banker with six to eight decks of cards. The dealer inserts the cards into a mechanical con trivance and each player pulls out his own cards seeking a winning total of eight or nine. R1 J'" Tin Robin Hoo 1 WASHINGTON UPI Pvt. Lemuel King liked the Army even if it didn't like him. But he has changed his mind. King was so fond of the service life that he managed to sneak back in with a higher rank and a plush job after the Army boot ed him out. When his masquerade was un covered and he was slapped with a court martial, however. King lost no time in declaring himself a civilian. And his legal end run worked. ' The Military Court of Appeals made public the tangled details of the story Friday in upholding the 38-year-old Californian s con tention that he could not be court martialed because he was not a real soldier when he committed an offense. After he had served 14 years in the Army, King, of Seaside Calif., was discharged for mis conduct in 1958. Frend Fakes Orders He contacted an unidentified friend at Fort Ord, Calif., who was able to fix him up with fake orders along with a promotion to sergeant first class, On the strength of his bogus papers, King was shipped to Frankfurt, Germany, where he was assigned as a food supervi sor in a quartermaster section. For five months, he lived the good life. There was the ser geant's pay, allowances for quar ters, soft duties and no KP. Unfortunately, King was not quite satisfied. He went AWOL He was picked up and his gravy train screeched to a halt. The army court martialed King for unauthorized absence and sen fenced him to a year of hard la bor at the U. S. Disciplinary Barracks at Lompac, Calif, Protests Soldier Status At that point King lost his love for the Army. He wrote the judge advocate general in Washington protesting that he was a civilian having been discharged back in 1958 and therefore not subject to court martial The three-man military appeals court, the highest reviewing au thority for military trials, ruled 2-1 that King indeed had been a civilian since 1958 and that the court martial was null and void. The military jurists indicated, however, the Army could have a bo at King in the civilian courts But authorities said it would be some time before they could de cide whether to try that. King's friend at Ft. Ora was honorably discharged between the time he slipped King the phony papers and the date of King s ar rest. So the military courts, can't touch the friend, either.
