Thus, the biggest star in movie land feels qualified to discuss the rise and fall of quiz whiz Charles Van Doren, whom Marlon says tumbled for the American past time of myth-making. "It's the sort of thing that real ly sells in the I'nited States, Brando said, stretched out on a divan in his Paramount dressing room. "It is all based on the im maturity and naivete of a public that takes childish delight in fairy stories. And, like children, Ameri cans want to perpetuate the tales whether they are true or not. . Americans are Outraged " Speaking deliberately, cautious ly choosing his words, Brando raid Americans are outraged when the make-believe stories are de stroyed. He refused to say if this is the reason he will not comment on his own myth. Marlon, in town for six months to edit his "One - Eyed Jacks" This log is made up from Information by Television Stations and its lecuracy cannot be guaranteed bv the La Grande Observer State Daily Loses Libel Case Action EUGENE i UPI I Circuit Judge Frank B. He'd rather let friends and enemies believe what they want. "The public is predisposed to believe things about me before they meet me," he went on. "What they read is generated by newsmen I've refused to see be cause I don't wish them to write about my personal life. "I cannot understand why any one wants to know the small per sonal matters of my life. If it were interest that would be one thing, but it is just curiosity. Exchanging Views "On the other hand, with peo ple I like I am more than willing to discuss any personal issues providing the person is genuinely' interested in exchanging views and feelings. j "But when the interest is super ficial they are just titillating themselves, and I cannot be a. Fart of that." Brando has little sympathy for' fellow acturs who bare their pri vate lives. "It's an incredible psychic phe-' r.omin , he observed. "Imagine, some of them even have photog raphers taking pictures of the births of their children. Unbeliev-' able! "I'm not discussing my private life now, n:r will I do so in the future.
