Observer, La Grande, Ore., Thurs., Nov. 5, 1959 Poge 15 h A. .i r . NOBEL WINNER Salvatore Quasimodo, a left-leaning Italian poet, received the 1959 Nobel Prize for Litera ture, it was announced from Stockholm, Sweden. Qua simodo is the first Italian in 25 years to win the coveted literature prize. Letters To The Editor To the Editor: I have a few questions I would like to ask you about the propos ed oxidation ponds. In the year cf 1915 my husband and I lived on the ranch east of Grande that L. D. Shelton now owns and operates, which is a dairy ranch. We, too, were dairy men at this time. That winter we had three and a half feet of snow on the level It stayed on about one month. Do you really think you could combat the ov erflow of the lagoon ponds during weather like this? There was water everywhere, and no place for it to go. The drain seepage in (or was) exactly northeast of where the proposed oxidation pond is to be located. The snow and water ran directly into our lot where our dairy herd had to stay. With the milk laws and all the sanitation laws we now have to abide by, the drinking water would have to be tested daily. The farmers in this neighbor hood have spent their entire lives here and our homes are dear tc us. Would ycu voters consider coming out in this neighborhood and buying small tract of land and establishing a home? Would you care to have your friends call on you and see the beautiful background of your homes, the La Grande Oxidation Ponds and Sewage Disposal system? My husband milked from 18 to 20 cows for 43 years. A lot of this milk was distributed to your hungry children. Would you care now to have the milk your children drink come from cows that drink polluted water frcm (he proposed oxidation ponds. On behalf of our community and homes, please vote No on Friday. Mrs. Alex Robertson Rt. 2, La Grande To the Editor: The new sewage site is in one cf the finest neighborhoods in the valley, as I lived there five years and some of our dearest friends still live close to the proposed site. This lagoon is an unsightly, unpleasant, smelly scare to the whole valley and es pecially the surrounding neigh borhood. We live in the valley but pay taxes for 1609 Adams Avenue (very close to the subway). What would the close residents and businesses think and do if we moved an old W.P.A. outhouse up on Adams or built an open cess pool in the back yard. That would be much cheaper than pay ing a monthly sewage charge, and I don't feel it would smell Steel Firms Forgetting Expansion NEW YORK, (UPI The staggering losses suffered by most steel companies in the third quarter is forcing these firms to take a hard second look at their future expansion and modernization- plans. Iron Age magazine said today. Most companies will go ahead with announced programs, the metal-working weekly said, but some "will be hard-pressed fi nancially to follow through with immediate plans." Nearly all, the magazine added, will be affected to the extent that future programs will be re appraised or delayed. The publication pointed out that tooling orders from hard hit steel users also have been de ferred. While auto makers re port they have not altered their tooling programs, toolmakers say it is very difficult to "get deci sions" on programs that have oeen long under study. At the same time Iron Age said some shortages of consum er goods can be expected in the winter months. Autos in parti cular will be in short supply with car output dropping to less than nan of normal production for the period. INSPECTING BASES TOKYO UPIi U. S. Pacific Army Commander Gen. I. D. White arrived here Tuesday for a tour of military installations in ne r-ar East. He will visit Ko rea. Okinawa. Formosa, Hong Kong, and Guam. '.2 i r f R or lcok any worse than the sew age lagoon in Gekelcr I.ane. It is the desire of the resi dents of Gekelcr Lane,' the city of La Grande, and the valley to improve the appearance and at tractiveness of their homes and community, sr please, each vot er, sit down and think a mom ent on how discouraged you would feel if this type of thing was go ing in across the street from you, when you had spent sums of tioney and time on improve ments. 1 hope this bond issue allows for damages that will come lat er. There are about 20 homes that are close neighbors to this proposed site and it is felt that the drinking water will be affec ted by a 90 acre open pond. Ab solutely no one would sit still and let a thing like this happen without going for damages. So, as a wise voter, sit down and think this sewage problem over before you go to the polls. I un derstand the other type of system would cost more but it still might be the cheapest by the time the many unexpected hidden expens es are paid for. Mrs. Hazel Hawkins. Route 2, La Grande. LEGAL NOTICE RESOLUTION We, the members of the Cove Spcrtsman's Club,, do hereby formally resolve that a lagoon type sewage disposal plant for the City ol La Grande, Oregon, would be contrary to the best in terests of. the people of the valley and to the wildlife of the valley. and, therefore, petition the City of La Grande to change its plans and net to establish a lagoon type sewage disposal plant. , ..
