The answer came Wednesday night on NBC-TV. Another fast hiehlv entertaining show, his col or special was filled with tasteful music, good humor, crisp, fluid, youthful dancing and Astaire's charm. I guess part of the story is that Astaire the lad with loquacious legs and fluent frame, surrounds himself with talent that, like him self, makes hard work seem easy. His voreeous partner, Barrie Chase, was better Wednesday niuht than she was last year Naturally, comparisons must De made of Astaire s two snows, as I look back on the first, 1 feel that it had an edge in the orig inality informality imaginative departments. It also had more of Astaire the dancer. But Wednes day night't had a feeling of great er cohesiveness, direction and smoothness. (There was some dis concertingly abrupt splicing of the tape in the "That Face" number, however, ta mar the otherwise butter-shooth production. The opening number, "The Aft- erbeat," started the show off with mucho gusto and bounce and this was followed with a pace-changing, misty and moving "That Face." Drummer Alvin Stoller another of Astaire's "no-sweat" friends joined Mr. A in a humor-laced drum-and-dance spe cialty. Jonah Jones and his trum pet took over the stage for some easy-to-take jazz and then Jones and Astaire took part in an overly-cute, meaningless bit of dia logue. A moody, superbly staged and choreographed "Night Train" number followed. Every show this season has gone beatnik and As taire's was no exception. Miss Chase and Astaire kidded a 'word jazz'' number called, "My Baby," and this was TV-beatnik satire at its best. "Waltzing Ma tilda," featuring Barrie Chase, was a completely successful spoof. Next came a treat: Astaire singing, in white tie and tails. He ran through a handful of the many great tunes he has intro duced and although he has added a contrived lurch to his voice, he still is a masterful pop singer. I won't try to figure out wheth er this was a nine, 20 or one Emmy show. But I'll go along with anyone who wants to pin some more medals on old dad's chest. It was a warm, unusually enjoyable hour. Tho Channel Swim: Laurence Olivier has agreed to star in a TV version of Dostoevski's. "The Idiot," to be adapted by S. Lee Pogostin and directed by Robert Mulligan. This is the team that turned out the highly-acclaimed production of "The Moon and Six pence." Production is scheduled to begin next spring with Mulli gan creating his own company for the venture. "Sixpence was produced by David Susskind s Tal ent Associates. Playhouse 90's Christmas Eve presentation on CBS-TV will be an adaptation of "The Silver Whis tle," Robert McEnroe s comedy about a hobo's fantasies and their impact on old folks. Herbert Brodkin will produce and write the adaptation. Dick Clark's new book, dealing out advice to teei-agers and called, "Your Haipicst Years," is ready for the bo.kstulls. Industry sources report two NBC-TV hour long adventure shows, Kiverboat and Five Fingers, arc in wobbly shape because of low ratings. The NBC-TV Startime Special starring Ethel Merman will be presented Dec. 1, the network announced today.
