Anderson's allegorical "Winter set." of course, is, a showcase for the bitter dialogue and cynicism born of a spiritual and economic depression. But it ends 11 a tri umphant bath of newly-discovered live. The going gets sticky at times, but the message is worth it. Itobert llartung's adaptation re mained true to the original, al though references to radicals, overtones of political corruption and a sharp discourse of judicial expediency were missing. Still, Hartung was extremely skillful in his editing and his script was giv en a mighty assist by the gloomy setting of a New York City bridgehead and the delicate touches of producer - director (.ieorge Schaefer. Since Anderson's characters are highly-charged types who synthe- iml many of the attitudes of their times, I think some of the acting went overboard, especially for the TV tube's intimacy. Don .Murray, as Mio, the re venge-seeking son of an executed man, was generally convincing, but he had trouble pacing his anger in the second act. As -Mirianine, who brings love to Mio, Piper Laurie was sensi ble and sensitive, except for an awkward final scene. Charles liickford was an excellent Judge Gaunt. Martin Balsam and Ana tol Winogradoff handled their as signments as the Messrs Ksdras, -on and father, with skill. George C. Scott, the perennial TV villan, was as evil as ever, although he managed to work in a smile now and then. It was most becoming. The Hall of Fame and its new producer for t5!)-tt) .gave us something different Monday night. Ami the nice thing about this was it came off in fine style. ABC-TV reports that its Friday night detective series starring Kobert Taylor scored a 25.7 Tren dex, better than the combined ratings of CBS-TV's Twilight Zone and NBC-TV's fight. "Murder and the Android,'' a science fiction drama that gets an NBC-TV Sunday Showcase airing Nov. 8, will star Kevin McCarthy, Kip Torn, Vladimir Sokoloff and Suzanne Plcshette. Planned U.S. Flight To Moon For December 7 Is Torpedoed By FRANK ELEAZER UPI Staff Writer WASHINGTON (UPI I'm afraid a manned flight to the moon that was scheduled for Dec 7 won't be taking off after all. You know how much it costs to travel these days. And the gov ernment has said a Baltimore in ventor who worked out the trip can t sell any more stock to meet his expenses. The inventor and three associ ates were to make the flight on a space ship (lowered by "free energy," a type of propulsion which unfortunately the govern ment, in its own space work, has not been able to match. Records of the Securities and Exchange Commission indicate that only $185,000 had been ob tained from some 400 investors in this project before the agency got around to blocking the sales. Even with "free energy," that's probably not enough to cover a moon trip. One way. maybe. But in this case the travelers planned a round trip, with the return set for Dec. 15. The SEC hasn't made any com ment on the announced itinerary or other details of the trip. Its only complaint, when it went into court, was that the inventor had neglected to register his securi ties before offering them for sale as the law requires. With the stock market booming again, the SEC more aid more lately has been acting the kill joy. Needless to say. its efforts aren't always appreciated. . Some of those who put money behind the moon flight for in stance were bitter when the gov ernment started snooping around, interfering with science. The SEC is accustomed to this. Awhile back it prosecuted a fel low for fraud in connection with his fuelless engine and an atomic water machine to treat cancer. It was the people whose money he took -who rushed to defend him. But SEC is out to protect us. whether we like it or not. Just this week, the 30th anniversary of the big break in the market in October, 1929, the agency is launching an educational cam paign. The message is, investi gate before you invest. Beware of tips from strangers by long dis tance phone. Buy only through reputable brokers. , The law says securities general ly can't be offered for sale until registered with SEC, with all facts laid out on the table. Also, it's contrary to law to make false claims in trying to sell Lhem. There is always somebody though who doesn't seem to know about this. In July, SEC blew (he whistle on an outfit locating oil with gravity QUAKES KILL EIGHT ISTANBUL apii A strong earthquake rocked northeastern Turkey Sunday killing eight per sons in the village of Minis and injuring 36 others, police report ed. A New York securities dealer sdd a series of debentures on which 6 per cent interest was paid. With the revenue from each new (issuc, he was able to keep payments up on the last one.. Al though thnt looks like a workable plan to me. the SEC didn't think so. They put this fellow in jail. Since Oct. 29, 1929. all sort of protective devices have been .built into the securities market. So the SEC doesn't lcok for another Black Tuesday, ever. But it points out that the laws of supply and demand, averages, gravity and common sense have not been re pealed. In a speech at the National Press Club recently SEC Chair man Edward N. Gadsby warned investors that prices have gone up and down in the past and will do so in the future. And as for spec ulating, he said, amateurs who try this might just as well bet on the horses.
