INC, Death Cutting Down Older Generation Of Film Stars By VERNON SCOTT UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (LTD Now that 'movietown is moving into its third generation, death is cut ting down heroes and heroines who dominated screens for the past two decades stars who seemed like neighbors to the nations audiences. In the past year death to Ty rone Power, Mario Lanza, Paul Costello, Kay Kendall and Errol Klyim, among others. In each instance superstitious show folk talked about death NEWS CHUCKLES United Press International SLEEPLESS PIGEONS BRISTOL, England UPI Po liceman Joseph Gilbert, 26, Mon day asked local officials to re move the new street lamp outside his house because it kept his 65 pigeans from getting their proper sleep. BICYCLE THIEF EAST PATEKSON. N.J. UPI Felix Cintron told police Mon day the thief who has been steal ing his son's bicycle on the in stalment plan now has a com plete bike. First the headlight and gener ator were stolen, the wheels went next. The frame vanished Sun day. STEEL EMERGENCY WELLS. Nev. (UPI I The Un ion Pacific Railroad told town of ficials it couldn't replace the outdoor privy with inside plumb ing at its station because of the steel shortage. The City Council warned the railroad it would face a misde meanor charge if it didn't, re gardless of the steel strike. EGGHEADS EVANSTON. III. (LTD John L. oratit, it. expiainea to ponce why he stole two cases of eggs from a delivery truck: "A frieind of mine and I divid ed up the eggs and went to the beach and had an egg fight." LESSON IN LOGIC LONDON (UPD An elderly woman has decided that income tax collection called "inland rev enue" in Britain would be much more formidable if re named. According to the Journal of the Society of Civil Servants, she re fused to pay her tax and exp plained: "I am not liable to in land revenue as I live on the coast." CHECKS CHECKED BLOOMINGTON, 111. Most recent trio to die within a few days of one another were Miss Kendall, Paul Douglas and Wayne Morris. The deaths of Lanza and Flynn leaves an om inous vacancy in the cycle. Rarely Express GrM Peculiarly, actors who are knbwn for their emotional reac tions rarely display grief when one of their number passes. Nor do they indulge in maudlin eulo gies,, . It has become almost a trad ition among TV and movte stars to recall the lighter moments of their departed friends. At the country clubs, studios, network rehearsal stages, and the Brown Derby stories and an ecdotes fly. Such phrases as. "I once play ed the Orpheum circuit with him. . ." "I'll never forget the time she first set foot on a sound stage. . ." "Man, he could take a drink with the best of them," are part of the jargon. This week the stories are con centrated on Errol Flynn. His escapades already were be ing exaggerated, knitting the fab ric of a legend to challenge John Barrymore's flamboyant life and times. All the memories were kindly. Old foes fondly remem bered the good times, not the bad. Stars Forget Egos It is at these moments the stars forget their egos for a few minutes, chattering among, them selves like inhabitants of a small town. Florists quickly sell out of sprays. Western Union is flooded with telegram requests and the whisky flows a trifle ' more heavily. Hollywood no longer is a youth ful community, and most of Us first generation giants have died. Gone-are the Fairbanks, DeMills, Berrys, Arbuckles, Valentines and Louis B. Mayers. Now the second generation is roads of the spectre of death. But the community pauses only briefly, and you hear the saying, "The show must go on." Miss Taylor completed negotia tions Sunday to play the title role in "Cleopatra, a film that causes a squabble between the actress and her home studio MGM. MGM suspended the beautiful star briefly when she insisted on appearing in "Cleopatra" before fulfilling their contract by playing in "Butterficld 8. The actress said she disliked her lady of easy virtue role in the film and also objected to the script, which she called "almost pornographic." All was settled when MGM agreed to tame down the part and she guaranteed to re turn after the shooting of "Cleo patra." Miss Taylor said she would set up a trust fund with the million dollars for her children, Michael 6, Christopher, 4, and Liza, 2. She left for New York after the signing to join her husband, Eddie Fisher. The couple will go to Eng land where the movie will be filmed.
