'Gas-House'
Bv PRANK DANZIG
UPI Staff Writer
NEW YORK i UPI i The gas
house gang of show business,
Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and
Dean Martin, floated through an
entertaining hour of songs, dances
and their special brand of way
out utterances on ABC-TV Mon
day night.
It was very easy to take, work
ing in front of proper, dignified
and sedate sets, the trio frolicked
in a carefully carefree fuljon
and displayed huge quantities of
personal magnetism.
These three men can entertain
just by snapping their lingers, i
Since it was called the Frank
Sinatra Show, I'll begin by saying
the celebrated chairman of the
board was in command most of
the way. The exceptions came
when his untamed buddy, Ltean
Martin, upstaged him with some
unabashVd mugging. Fortunately,
the trio managed to avoid embar
rassing, or ultra-inside ad MLs.
(The Sinatra-Crcsby exchange of
Sept. 29 is still a vivid memory .
There was only one loud plug and
that was earned by Martin who
laid down and raised a shoe to
the, camera to display, a chalked
advertisement for his restaurant.

Beat The Old
Singing Stars
The show had a comfortable
pace, although it was slowed
down by an uninspired dance fea
turing Mitzi Gaynor, the only lady
guest on the show. And, treasure
ot treasures, it even had a sock
finish. As Frank. Bing. and Dean
imitated the Clayton, Jackson and
Durante team of years ago. Jim
my Durante in person came
on to join thorn. They, all strutted
off in triumph.
Another highlight was Sinatra
pretending he was on a night club
floor in front of the band. There
was no need to think about the
staging or the camera. Frankie
just sto:d there and put down the
songs in his authoritative way
and it was fine stuff.
Prior to that Frankie sat in
with a platoon of children (real
looking ones i to sing "Hi-Ho."
That. tco. was a knowing show
business touch that came off well.
Producer-director Bill Colleran
managed the cameras with pre
cision, catching the stars in fine
closeups to punctuate their moves.
Art director Jim Trittipo provided
an uncluttered stage and came up
with, of all things, a m'key climb
fcr Frank and co-company to re
cline on and dangle from. Guess
the siep ladder is through on TV.
Th Channel Swim: Harry Sal
ter, producer of Name That Tune,
has been asked by CBS-TV and
the sponsor to come up with a
suitable new show for the Mon
day time sl:t. 'Tune' was kayoed
by the network's new no-quiz pol

! DcWitt as emcee. The CBS pol
B icy. besides banning big prizes,

Producer Walt Framer reports
he. tco, hopes to sell a substitute
for his cancelled show. The Big
Payrff. Called Fun. Fashions and
.Music. Framer would co-star Bert
Parks and Bess Myerso.i. He said
the show would offer "other non
