They didn't kid around in those days Harry S. Truman was present ed in a tasteful manner during CES-TVs Jack Benny show Kin- day night. The videotaped ''ap pearance was a luw key, food rtured adventure that helcd plug the former President's mo- moiial library at Independence, Mo., and perpetuate the usual jokes abtut Benny's aje n:tlkin- llmt ways. T rumaii appeared at ease while explaining the vari cus presidential duties but seem ed less comfo-table reading from the cue cards. The sound tfact wasn't too dear and there were untimely furniture squeaks, but otherwise this unusual bit of pro gramming was a success. Saturday nighfs Phil Silvers CBS-TV special, and original mu sic by Nat Hiken and Gordon Jenkins called, "The Ballad of Louie the Louse," was distin guished only by a skilled cast's attemots to mug laughs out of a Sgt. Bilko of the U.S. Army, his antics were fresh, often hilarious. Transplanted to Broadway and tagged as a loan shark, his Kil koesqueapades grated against conventional values and seemed forced, obsolete and awkward. However, the sight of Silvers go ing through his "shakedown'' cruises at top sreed, even in a show of this sort, is still a thing of beauty. On Friday night, Victor Borge's NBC-TV secial had a short supply of the zany humo that made his earlier shows so ftninvahle. While the filmed sea-' mentF. made in Copenhagen, were interesting, Borge's takeoff cn "Hamlet" was tedious. In short, the great Dane's special was a bit dog - eared. Another NBC-TV special, Project 20's Life in the Thirties, recaptured the flavor of that decade with some fine old film clips, clever edit ing, excellent music and a solid writing job. . A new ABC-TV series. Robert Taylor starring in the Detectives, (whatever hap'jened to titles like M-Squad, Dragnet and Lineup?) debuted cn Friday with a prom ising premise, good acting and commercially acceptable detec tives. I think the scries will, do well. Ed Sullivon visits NUC-TV s Jack Paw Show this Wednesday. . . Friday ninht's Person to Person on CBS-TV will visit the homes of Jack Leniinon and "Prince" Mike Romanoff. Cliff Arquette, or Charley Wea ver, a irounces he'll lly in Ui best Peter Pan traLtioi during Ifobby Lo'jby fhow . Lee J. Cobb rl Sylvia Syd cy will star in "The Committeeman," one cf the 'ii snei ial prodiic'ions in the new CBS-TV G.E. Theater series. The Channel Swim: Perry Co mo's produc:ion firm, Roieom, will produce two 13 week half hour filmed shows as Como's XBC - TV summer replaoeneit. Kxccutive 'Xilm producer Alvin Cooperman, whose credits in clude the Shirley . Temple Story book and the June Allyson scries, also will turn out four one hcur pilot films for Como's firm. CBS-TV's retl talk j By Leonard Craig Many of the new synthetic and combination tdbries in use to day are labeled "washable." But for thost of you wht are perfect ionists abou your appear ance, these labels leave a great deal to be desir ed. Many art icles so labeled are washable, it's true, but the amount of care that must be exercised ta make sure the water is bi'Un a certain temperature, and to see that special soaps and de tergents are used, makes the end result hardly worth the trouble. It is better economy in the long run to have these garments dry-cleaned, or, at the discretion of your cleaner, wet dry-cleaned. Prcfessional wet dry-cleaning does not rik he shrinkage and color fading which often occurs durinit laundering by ordinary methods. Most fab rics carrying the "dry clean able" and "washable" labels respond satisfactorily to the wet dry cleaning process. This is the only method that will re move snnts of many kinds and particularly water - borne stains Next to being thoroughly clean, a garment must be cx perty finish"d to look its best.
