Hermann was a phenomenon I worthy of study. Dr. Theodore St haofer of the university of Chi cago paid, because he was well alrng in a duck's life before he decided he wailed to be a dog or began to believe he was one. Because of Hermann's prema ture death under the wheels of an automobile last month, Schaefer said, Kcientistt will never know whether he might have been per suaded la be just plain fowl again. Hermann the dog-like duck lived I on the farm of Alvin Schneider near Oldham, S. 0., and for the lirst year o.' his life he was like any other drake. When Hermann s mate died, he attached himself to Schneider's I dog. Tony. He followed the dog Eleclric Healers ARVIN and LA SALLE AT LA GRANDE HARDWARE everywhere, even after the an noyed pooch growled menacingly and seized the duck 3 neaO' in his mouth as if to end the onesided friendship then and there. Gradually, Hermann began to behave like Tony. . When the dog chased cars, Her mann waddled madly after them, too. When the dog barked, Her mann tried to bark. When rain came down, Hermann huddled un der shelter with Tony instead of enjoying the downpour. ' Schaefer, attracted by a United Press International story about Hermann, went to the Schneider farm to see the duck while he was visiting in South Dakota re cently. He spent several hours ob serving Hermann. Schaefer said he was interested because Dr. Eckard H. Hess, one of his faculty colleagues at the University of Chicago, is a leading investigator of the phenomena of impriting when exposed to an ani mate or Inanimate object early in life, "apes' it like a normal new born takes after its mother. The scries will continue to deal with the,r-exploits; 'of federal agents, led by Eliot Ness, against the remnants of Al Capone's pro hibition era mcb in Chicago. As a two-partcr on the Desilu Play house last season, the story dealt with how Ness sent Canone to prison on an income tax rap, and it was a resounding success. It had the professional touch, along with drama, authenticity and ex citement. Happily, it still has ail this. Thursday night's episode, writ ten by David Karp, directed by John Peyser and narrated by Walter Winchell. was called "The chell's narration giving it a boost, the episode contained impressive camera work, crisp, realistic di ogue, authentic sets. I'd, give the acting honors to Persoff. De spite a tendency to move his jaw too much Persoff took command of his scenes and was a power ful performer all through the show. Good jobs were turned in by Nicholas Georgiade, Bruce Gordon and Robert Stack. It was a fine start, in fact, th'.s one adds up to the best of ABC-TV's new batch. The Channel Swim: Charles Laughlon will narrate and star in a 90-minute presentation that includes highlights from Shake peare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream.'' The program, to be tailed at Stratfo:d-On-Avon, Eng land, will be shown as an NBC- Empty Chair." Frank Nitti, was shown trying to fill Capone's chair by gunning down a couple of would be compe titors as they sat in barber chairs. But Jake Guik, played by Nehemiah Persoff told Nitti he was going about it in the wrong way. "A gun can't think," he said. "Jake substituted brains for brawn. He set up a business like one-for-all, all-for-one opera tion and was able- to frustrate Ness, who trie dto stir up an intra-mob feud. However, Ness fi nally caught Uuzik by turning Gu zik's niece into a deputy agent. One sidelight to (he simple plot was the way Guzik and Ness un-1 dcrstood each other's strafegems. At one noint, after his effort to start a fend failed, Ness, played by Robert Stack, said, "Trie ken nel is quiet. The dogs are eating out of the same bowl." He had his enemies tagged all along.
