night's prese.itation. second in the
new Star-Times series.!
Jerry Lewis starred as Joey
Itobips, Cantor liabinowitz's son,
ho broke his father's heart by
b eaking a family line of five gen
erations of cantors to go into
show business.
Because there was only an hour
tor the story, there was no time
to explore the merits of the father-son
conflict, or to present full
portraits of each. Nor was there
an attempt to resolve the ques
tion, although the play did make
the point that children cannot
roam too far from their heritage.
The conflict was set up in such
lii:es as this, recited by the can
tor, played by Eduard Franz: "If
our young ones move away, who
will be left to record the heart
breaks?"
Lewis said later on: "Without
audience acceptance, I am nothing."
The telescoping caused many of
the serious scenes to take on burlesque-style
dimensions, for every
line had to cover too much
ground. It had to try to present
symbolic values as well as down-
to earth ones, and when charac
ters become open symbols, they
make for troublesome dialogue. '
By burlesque-style scenes, I
mean such things as: Joey's ar
rival home during his father's
birthday party, when his father
slaps him for joking about ritual
and says, "Better I should be

deaq that my son should sing
jazzed holy songs in my house.
Get out of my house." Joqy gets.
Later, when his father suffers
a stroke before the start of Vom
Kippur servicer. Joey tries to put
off a bedside visit because he is
about to make his TV debut. He
tells his mother, backstage, that
he can't because. . ."Just look
all this." Someone shouts,
"You're on, Joey." and he goes
on to sing part of "Be A Clown,"
in clown makeup. It made me
groan, it was so creaky.
Lewis was convincing as an in
secure, nervous, guilt-ridden com
ic at the start of the how, but
he pounded too hard on his big
dramatic scenes. Molly Picon
played his mother and gave it the
old schmaltz, as did Kranz as the
father. Ann Maria Albcrghetti
was Joey's discoverer in the show
and she had very little to do.

Emmy-Winning Writer Tosses
In Sponge On Network War

Serling, Emmy-winning TV scripl
er, has thrown in the sponge in
his lengthy war against networks
and sponsors now that he's pro
ducing his own TV series.
"The sponsor is king in tele
vision," Serling said grudgingly
"And he always will be. It's a
fact of life we must live with."
This total surrender just about
eliminates the rebellious young
men who once fought tooth and
nail for uncensored scripts. . Rod
was one of the last of them.
Trouble With Sponsors
"I never got along with spon
sors when I was a writer." he
said. "That's why I'm producing
my own show. There still are
restrictions, but now I'm dealing
directly with the sponsor and run
ning into less trouble.
"The situation finally reached
the heights of stupidity when nor
mal words couldn't be mentioned
because they also were the names
of competing products. I had to
take a line out of a script that
read," have you got a match?"
The show was sponsored by a
lighter company.
"Nobody can be 'lucky' on a
program that is sponsored by a
cigaret firm, and criminals can't
go to the gas chamber if the
guys picking up the check manu
facture gas stoves."
Serling's new show. "The Twi
light Zone," already has come a
cropper with sponsors, but Rod
doesn't fight them.
"I'm too busy trying to prove
1 a pet theory of mine." he said.

At 34 Serling is a scarred vet
teran of 10 years of TV writing,
including "Playhouse 90." "The
U. S. Steel Hour," "Studio One"
and "Climax."
"I began producing so I could
write for myself, have a hand in
the casting, and meet sponsors on
their own ground." he concluded.
