The comedy ketchej are a few beats too long rid the trisuiiess is missing. Steve himself doesn't seem re laxed, lie's not laughing very of ten as he tries to serve up too many laughs. Monday night there e:e fne separate comedy seg ments, and none could be called exti adordinary. That's not Allen's usual average. The major comedy effort Mon day ninht was a sketch showing how TV producers try to come up with new gimmicks to make Westerns seem different. Guest star Leo Marvin played a fron tier ma-shal straight, then as a hipster, an Knglishman, and final ly, as Ed Marrow. Louis Nye and Gabe Dell also varied their roles as badmen accordingly. It was a skit that needed some new gim micks itself. for example, wnen Dell was dressed as Bela Lugosi, we knew that he would be going after someone's jugular before long. He A DRY BED FOREVER! What's the answer'' I don t think it has much to do with the night of the week, the time of night, the sponsor or Allen's switch from New York to Hollywood. I think it s just a nnestinn of setting stale. Fresh confedy ideas are needed if this hour is to be the superior comedy program it once was. A former member of Steve Al len's gang. Tom Poston, remains in New York to conduct a week day game show. Split Personality, on NBC-TV. Despite the clinical title, this Goodson-Todman pack age finds two contestants compet ing for mink coats, boat rides. etc., by trying to identify famous people through word-and-picture clues. The origins of this game are about as numerous as its shortcomings. Among the short comings are a lack of suspense, humor, or clever tactical possibil ities. Poston, normally a man of many talents, is confined to the usual daytime dialogue and seems to go through the emceeing mo (ions with an air of chagrin. Mon day, he reminded viewers to watch the Steve Allen show later on and added. "I wish I could be with them." So do I. The Channel Swim: Joan Craw ford goes Western in an upcom ing Zane Grey Theater episode on CBS-TV. Filming begins this week. Lisa Kirk is the latest ad dition to' the "Music From Shu bert Alley" special that will be seen on NBC-TV Friday, Nov. 13. She joins host Andy Williams, Al fred Drake, Doretta Morrow, Bet ty Comden and Adolph Green. Burl Ives will portray King David in a CBS-TV GE Theater drama, "Absalom. My Son," this season. The next CBS-TV daytime spe cial in its woman series, "The Marriage That Failed," will re port on marriage conflicts and how they are handled by progres sive agencies in Detroit and To ledo. Viewing is set for Monday, Nov. 9. Marge Thomas, actor comic Danny Thomas' daughter, makes her acting debut opposite her dad in a Zane Grey Theater show later this season. Ex-Child Star Faces Dope Rap LOS ANGELES (UPI) For mer child star Bobby Driscoll, who won a special Academy Award in 1949 for his juvenile performances, was booked Sun day as a suspected narcotics add ict by sheriff's deputies. Driscoll, 22, was arrested with two other men who deputies said had "narcotics outfits" on them when officers noticed needle marks on his arms. Driscoll won a special Oscar for his portrayls in "The Window" and "So Dear To My Heart," in l'.M9. He also appeared in the film "Treasure Island." w mi , i -i -J '.i t". Goebel Is 'Lonesome George' With TV Show This Season By VERNON SCOTT UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (UPI) L'ill ole lonesome George Gobel will truly be lonesome this season with no "Alice" on the show, no produc tion numbers, and very few guest stars. In moving from an hour-long show on NBC to a half-hour pro gram on CBS, Gobel has returned to his old nightclub format. But. Dr. B. B. Raginsky also warned that use of hypnosis "is meat for the charlatan" because it is "so easy to induce." Itaginsky is president of the In ternational Society fur Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He said there are quacks who "are poorly motivated" in their use of hypnotic therapy either "to show a sense of power or to correct in competency." Hypnosis, he explained in an in terview, is an altered stale of consciousness ' when a perso.i is less resistant to ideas and more susceptible to suggestion.
