Wliere filmed series are con cerned, two words sum it up: No progress. A rash of imitative prog-am-ming, which ig '.ores fresh ideas, has ltd to some dreary debuts by about 20 of the newcomers. While I haven't seca all of The Alas kans. Wichita Town or I'h;lip Marlowe yet, I'd iay they'd have to go some to be as bau as, say, Ihe Dennis O'Keele Show. Betty Mutton's Show, Adventures In Paradise, Johnny Itingo, Tight rope, Man and the Challenge and perhaps a dozen new-but-old shows of almost similar shabbi ness. The only promising newcomers in the bunch are Twilight Zone, The Deputy, Dennis The Menace, Fibber McGee und Molly und the revised lineup. Just below this elite group, in terms of succeed ing in what they set out to do, I'd set The Hebel, Men Into Space, Hennesey, Dobie Gillis, John Gunther's High Koad, June Allyson. liiverboat and Trouble shooters. Two new "live" shows that arc sad disappointments are Charley Weaver's Hobby Lobby and Dick Clark's World of Talent. In a spe cial category we find Sunday Showcase, which has been disap pointing so far but is making a valiant effort to provide fresh, high quality TV shows. As for those perennial TV sea son penper uppers, the specials, we've had fine ones by Art Car ney, Goodman Ace, Bing Crosby, Hosalind liussell and Arthur God frey in that order to help us get over the dreary aspects Ihe non-specials. Here's hoping the next month gets better. A DRY BED FOREVER! Embarrassment and an In feriority complex can easily come to your child through the bed-wetting habit , Is BED-WETTING normal? No! This goes for James Arness, Hhonda Fleming. Tommy Sands and. Lionel Hamp ton, but not for that rotund utility man, Burl Ives, who fitted the proceedings just fine. When will TV stars learn that, before they rush out to sign up "names," they first should determine wheth er they are necessary? The high lights cf the show, which marked Ked's 30th anniversary in show business, were Skelton's magnifi cently rubberized facial expres sions. The final segment, in which a parade of Skelton characteriza tions joined him for a party thanks to excellent toping tech niques was inventive and en joyable. The Channel Swim: Pennsylvan ia Supreme Court Justice Michael Musmanno, a leading figure in the Sacco-Vanzetti case of the 1920s, will reenact his role in NBC-TV's two-part Sunday Show case dramatization of the contro versial case next May. Musman no also will serve as the produc tion's technical adviser. Claire Bloom and Siobhan Mc Kcnna join Robert Morley and Kenneth Haigh in the CBS-TV Playhouse 90 adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's "Misalli ance," to be seen on Oct. 29. As the World Turns, a daytime soap opera on CSB-TV, will devote three shows, on Oct. 22, 23 and 26, to the wedding o, Penny Hughes (Rosemary Prinz) and Jeff Baker (Mark Rydell.) A net work official says the marriage is the result of letters from viewers, since writer Krna Phillips intend ed Penny for another suitor o.i the show. Cherokee Indian Repents In Church REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (UPI) A Cherokee Indian from Okla- home walked down the aisle of a Redwood City church Sunday, knelt with a group of parishioners and then told a stranger at his side that he wanted to "confess a bank robbery." The Indian, 29-year-old Gawes key Smith, repeated his confession 30 minutes later in the San Mateo County Sheriff's office. Smith said he hid his car in the foothills near his home in Okmul gee, Okla., last Feb. 3. He hitch hiked into Webber Falls, where he said he robbed the Webber Falls State Bank of $2,6Hi. The Indian said he forced a phy sician to drive , him back to his own car and later spent the money on medical bills and whis key. "Ever since, I have had no peace of mind," Smith said. "It worried me and I couldn't sleep." He told sheriff's deputies he en tered the church Sunday because "Now I want to make my peace with God." the La Grande Observer. Top Banana On Fourth Series TV Show Is 'Fibber' Sweeney By VERNON SCOTT UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD t UPI i Durabil ity is a rare trait in TV, so rare, in fact, few performers make good when attempting a second series. Exceptions are Ann Sothern, Robert Cummings and Richard Bcone. Exertional is Bob Sweeney, who has survived three shows "My Favorite Husband," "Ou. Miss Brooks," "The Brothers" and now is embarking on li s fourth series, "Fibber McGee and Molly." A bald little man with a pixie face and a can't-do-anylhing-right appearance. Bob finally is top ba nana on his own show, a fact that may prove his undoing. In past years Sweeney was always the guy the stars relied on to pick up dull spots in the script. Now he's got to carry the load him self with no Sweeney to pick up the slack. Not Thinking About Fifth "I'm not thinking abrut a fifth show," Sweeney grinned during lunch at the Brown Derby. "Ami L can't understand actors who want to get out of a successful series. Most of them are never heard of again. "I say keep the store open as long as possible. A series is the best possible deal for a:i actor. You never have to worry about where your next job is coming from." Because Jim Jordan originated "Fibber" more than 20 years ago on radio, and followed it up with two , movies, Bob is competing with a legend, a character al ready established in viewers' minds. "I've never met Jordan," he said. "I can't compete with a mental image, so I've avoided meeting him. This Winter WASHINGTON (UPI) Surgeon General Leroy E. Burr.oy has urged four groups of people in pa-ticular to got influenza vacci nations before the flu season starts. Buraey said Sunday that the predominant type of flu this fall and winter probably will be the Asian strain rather than "influen za B'' which was the major trou blemaker last year. The Public Health Service, he said, didn't aiticipate any big flu epidemit'3 but vaccinations shouid be obtained from family physi cians for persons in the following groups: Those for whom the onset of influenza might represent an add ed health risk, such as individuals with cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions, persons over 55 with a chronic illness of any type, and pregnant women. Persons responsible for care of the sick. Persons who provide essential public services, such as police men, firemen, and transportation and communications workers. Persons working for indus tries and stores which want to keep a low absenteeism rate.
