Young people in all their finery danced in the streets and bands playing ancient drums and flutes uaiidercd noisily rouvd this an cient city which was celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Com munist take-over in China the first ten years of the new regime in a country which has seen ami endured many regimes. The parade started at precisely 10 o'clock when the Chinese lead ers and Nikita Khrushchev joined the leaders of Communism from 8" countries on the balcony of the Gate of Heavenly Peace, the southern gate of the old forbidden qity. ' , The display began with an ex hortation by Minister of Defense Lin Piao and a military parade. , After a mercifully short mil ila'y parade came a most mag nificent outburst of color and gaiety. It lasted for three hours and not once was I bored. It was superbly colorful, and yet done (rlth exquisite taste. 'First came children in batches of about a thousand all dressed alike. Alter the children came factory workers and peasants. The "minorites" marched, t h e people from the far-flung provin ces of China, Mongolians, Ti betans and peoole from some of the backward tribes where slav- . ery was the way of life until ' a very short time ago. The parade ended with a march past of massed red flags and the cracking of mortars as they shot slogans on long streamers into the air to parachute down into the crowd.
