The show went through a full hour without a gunshot. This U'hI some etching views of Hawaiian beaches and streets were the only distinguishing fea tures of the show, however, We're always being told about etthe leisurely way of life Hawai- ians enjoy, but the extraordinary languor, of this new show is defi nitely not an asset. In order to use up the allotted hour, viewers were detoured into a nightclub floor show and other stand time killing devices while the wafer-thin plot marked time. The regular characters, all play ed without distinction, are Anthony Steele: Boh Conrad as Tom Lo paka, Tracy's partner: Connie Ste vens as Crickef Blake, Steele's aide who also works as a night club camera girl and singer Fon cie Ponce as Kim, a jive-talking cab driver. The plot, a conventional excur sion into uncovering the cause of ome dangerous accidents that continually befall a visiting Kng-lish-woman. was introduced by Kfrem Zimbalist Jr., a star of ABC-TV's most successful private- eye series, 77 bunset atrip, tt- rem spoke to Steele by phone to tell him to keep an eye on the case. Oaybe next week Edd "Koo kie" Byrnes will call up Poncie Ponce to chat about the 10 car models. There was a point in the show where a woman exclaimed "tem peramental artists." Steele told her, "careful you're married to one. Ihe woman replied, writ ers don't count," They still do where TV mys teries arconccrned. Ozzie and Harriet began se uatm No. 8 in tedious fashion Wednes day night. The ABC-TV episode, filmed last summer, centered around a visit by an old sailor friend of Ozzie's and David Nelson's desire to leave school and join the globe- circling sailor. The sailor, played with good humor by the late Wayne Mor ris, was supplied with a hamock because the Nelsons know that all sailrs use hammocks. And Kicky brought in a bird cage because he knows all sailors have parrots on their shoulders. That's the lev el of the humor, folks. Not only does this heavy-handed production lack subtlety, humor, intelligence. originality, imagination and a sense of daring, it also displayed some curious unreal detached act ing by Ozzie, Ricky and David Nelson. THE CHANNEL SWIM: Ed Sul livan is inserting a filmed inter view with Mario Lanzo into this Sunday's CBS-TV hour. The inter view was filmed in Rome last summer, where Lanza. 38, died Wednesday' ... Friends Say Lanza 'Ate' Himself Dead hCME UPIi Friends specu lated today that overeating and drastic reducing cures possibly hastened the death of Mario Lan za, the temperamental tenor many admirers ranked second only to the immortal Enrico Ca ruso. Lanza died Wednesday at the age of 38 in the Giulia Clinic here. He had been in the hospital about a week. An announcement from the clinic said the American - born singer "died of arterial hyperten sion with complications. He had been receiving normal methods of treatment." Suffered Heart Ailment Lanza had been suffering from a heart ailment for some time. A close friend said he died of a heart attack complicated by hy pertension and phlebitis blood clots in the legs. But a number of sources said Lanza entered the clinic to lose weight for his third Italian film since he stormed out of Holly wood. The reports could not be confirmed. The Home newspaper Momento Sera headlined: "Mario Lanza killed by reducing cure." It said he was undergoing a 15-day treat ment to reduce his weight from 2HU to 198 pounds. Att Gargantuan MmIs Lanza long had been fighting a battle against overweight. Be tween movies,' he lived on a grand scale, eating gargantuan meals. He once said he could gain 10 pounds a week "without trying." A household spokesman said that no funeral arrangements had yet been made. Mrs. Lanza, the former Betty Hicks, whom he married in 1945, remained se cluded in their 15-room mansion, Their four children were sent to friends at a nearby beach resort. Mack is the hero of a jump poll in the country. It's also stirred up a heap of consternation. CBS in New York banned the record, fearing Mack and his blade might further inspire teen age hoodlums in the big city. Other groups objected to the op ening lines dealing with sharks, in the belief the record was capi talizing on recent West Coast shark deaths. mil 109 It maae up Trem inivrmaiion wy iwivviaion arartont I accuracy cannot ba guaranteed by the La Grand Obiorvar. Commendation To Local Serviceman On Navy' Vessel Robert I. Mastcrson, boatswain's mate third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester A. Masterson of La Grande, is serving aboard the fleet tug USS Cocopa operating out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Masterson informed his par ents that he recently received a commendation for outstanding performance of duty from his CO. Last year, the Cocopa was awarded a Navy "E" for outstand ing battle efficiency, and was al so commended by Rear Admiral H. G. Hopwood, Pacific Fleet commander in chief, for partici pation with the U.S. Seventh Meet during the Ouemoy crisis and for salvage operations con ducted near Japan. Masterson's ship is now em ployed for search and rescue op erations on the Alaskan Sea frontier. Actually, the origin of the song goes back a couole of centuries to "The Beggars Opera." which gave a grotesque picture of the underworld in 18th Century Eng land. The knifer in that early epic was a Scotsman named Macheath. He was revived in Germany in the 20s in a play titled "The Three Penny Opera." Star of the show was German actress Lotte Lenya who sang "Mack the Knife." In 1954 "the Three Penny Op era" went to Manhattan and has been playing there ever since. History of the song was un known to young (22) Bobby Darin who recorded the hit song in an album lest February. When sales rocketed, his advisors discovered that "Mack the Knife'' was the key song. It took them until July 31 to hustle the tune onto a rec ord. Sells Mora Than Million Since then it has sold more than a million copies. A converted rock and roll sing er, Darin warbles his way through "Mack" in an inarticu late jargon, defying listeners to comprehend the lyrics, which tan be had by writing his press agents. "1 didn't try to slur the word," Darin claims. "I was looking for a song that would create excite mentand I found it. "The lyrics don't have any ef fect on teenagers. If they had, I wouldn't have recorded it in the first place. But I'm mighty glad I did. Thanks to 'Mack' I've got a million-dollar deal for pictures at Paramount Studio, television and night club offers by the dozen. "My only problem is to come up with another hit like 'Made' It's not going to be an easy song to follow." This and That Answer to Previous Puzzle '.
