WASHINGTON 'UPI Soviet
premier Nikita Khrushchev may
be gone but he's not forgotten at

NEW YORK (CPU - Adlai E.
Stevenson revealed today that So
viet Premier Nikita' Khrushchev
apparently has abandoned his op
position to step-by-step control
and inspection of disarmament by
! an international control body.
In a copyrighted article in the
' New York Times, the former
,-. Democratic presidential candidate
' described Khrushchev's "fantas-
tic" visit to the United States as
i a "hopeful omen" for world
; peace. He said conversations with
' Khrushchev during the day they
, spent together in Iowa indicated
a sharp reversal in some of the
Soviet Premier's attitudes.
"I asked if he thought he could
satisfy our insistence on adequate
and simultaneous inspection and
control if we agreed to his pro
posal for complete step-by-step
disarmament." Stevenson said.
, "His reply was that he thought
international control and inspec
ti tion adequate for each of the
" phases envisaged by his United
Nations speech could be
u achieved. . ."
i " "The replies left me with the
clear understanding that in their
view an international control body
. should have the power and facili
ties to control and inspect each
. step of the disarmament process
to the extent necessary to insure
compliance with that step, such
powers and facilities to vary ac
cording to the needs of each
phase."
The former Illinois governor
said this view threw new light on
ujiivut o uiooi manikin J KI
posals. Khrushchev's U.N. speech,
he said, was generally interpreted
, as offering full inspection only
"" after complete and total disarma
. ment had been made over a peri
" od of years by both sides acting
.... "in good faith."
Stevenson said Khrushchev told
( him the international control body
should have "free" access to in
spect all countries for compliance
, once the process of total disarma
., . ment is completed.

Remembered
rangements for Italian Prime
Minister Antonio Segni, who ar
rives Wednesday.
But memories of the Russian
visit lingered: The g;antic and
frequent meals the Soviet guests
put away: the "sweet and kindly"
personality of Mrs. Khrushchev;
the here-there and everywhere
presence of security agents; the
close family feeling among the
Khrushchevs; the two and three
hours a, night sleep that had to
suffice for many of the staff dur
ing their stay.
One Blair House veteran was
impressed most about the snacks
called for.
Much Food Consumtd
The amount of food consumed,
he said, was "unbelievable."
A standard breakfast when the
Khrushchevs were in residence
was yogurt, oatmeal, melon,
fresh fruit, orange juice, fish,
steak, bacon, eggs 1 soft-boiled or
fried) and heavy brown bread.
The Khrushchevs preferred all
the food put on the table at once-
family style-instead of being
served in courses.
Another insider won't forget the
sight of two tiny Chihuahuas, a
gilt to daughter Rada from a
Shermai Oaks, Calif., admirer,
yipping up a storm in the upstairs
library while the family tried to
watch the Premier deliver his
nationwide television speech.
t Nina Khrushchev, described by
Some aides as the Premier's se
cret weapon, was reported to have
booh as kind to the Blair House
staff as she was to her two of
ficial hostesses Mrs. Henry Ca-
ooi Lodge, jr.. wife of the U.S.
ambassador to the United Na
tidris, and Mrs. Llewyllen Thomp
son, wife of the assistant secre
tary of state.
Mrs. K Wdi-liktd
One woman staffer described
the Soviet first lady as being
very sou and human as can be
especially during the last few
days of her stay.
, Mrs. Khrushchev, it was dis
closed, would put a friendly hand
on the arm of the housekeeper.
Mrs. Victoria Geaney, and Invite
Iwrlo sit and watch television or
chat with her in a between-ap
pointments moment.
While Mrs. Khrushchev told a
news conference she regretted not
seeing more American department
stores, she and the other Russians
did a bang-up business in tele
phone shopping. Packages poured
into Blair House.
Dozens of $10.50 men's alligator
belts and $11.95 wash-and-wear
shirts were reported among the
many bundles loaded aboard the
Khiushchev planes for the return
flight to Moscow.
