TELEVISION IN REVIEW: Gary Moore Stuff In Fall Video Opener By FRED DANZIG UP I Staff Writers NEW YORK HTIi That friendly, ploddingly pleasant win ter ' replacement (or Andy Wil liam, the Garry Moore Show, re turned to CBS-TV Tuesday night While Moore isn't going to match the inventiveness and ex citement generated by the Wil liams gang during the summer, it is obvious thut Moore can match anyone around when it comes to a knowing, professional, big league production. This was evident in the premiere, which 1 saw at a screening because of the show' conflict with Bing Crosby's special. Garry's cohorts, Marion Lome and Ourward Kirby, had more to do than in past shows and were on-target with their material. Spe cial guests were Gertrude Berg, Vic Damone and Jane Powell, all of whom were entertaining in their .special ways, but I was sor ry that Miss Lorne and Miss Berg didn't have a tete-a-tete. A new feature on the show is "Candid Camera," where unsus pecting people are put through the wringer by Moore k Co. while a hidden camera records their be- fuddlement. Practical jokes "will get laughs, of course, but there is a touch of anguish i the experi ence that is not funny. I prefer untainted comedy. , A notable summit meeting oc curred on ABC-TV Tuesday night as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra. Peggy Lee and Louis Armstrong blended their talents in a show called, "The Bine Crosby Show." It was a ring-a-ding-dong-dandy hour. All stood and performed their songs with overpowering style, feeling and happy tones. It was enjoyable and refreshing. Al though an effort was made to give these entertainers an imag inative decor of glass knick knacks, the music was what made the show. If I had to pick pet numbers, I'd choose Sinatras' "Willow Weep for Me," Arm stron'g "Mack the Knife," all dT DAILY TV LOG 2KREM a KXLY w KHQ TV TV O TV WEDNESDAY ii:lni t'ol. The Many Love of Andy Hardy. . . oops; I mean Dobie Gillis, star ring Dwayne Hickman, went through the usual saccharined teen-age nonsense in it CBS-TV debut Tuesday night. The high light was a satire on crime movies, in which a lawman said, "take that, you loathsome crim inal types." If the rest of the show could rise even to this sa tirical level, it might be worth while. Unfortunately, the impres sion is that we're supposed to care about Dobie and his tire some love life. Must we? No, Virginia, it isn't true that Dobie is based on Frank Sinatra.) . The Channel Swim: Person To Person, which returns to CBS-TV on Friday, Od. 16 with visits to Jack Webb and Mae West, is moving its entire production staff from New York to .Hollywood in order to visit more than one screen star a month, as it did un der its old budget. NBC-TV's Jack Paar will be Jack Benny's guest star on Sunday, Nov. 29 over CBS-TV. George Bernard Shaw's "Misalliance," starring Robert Morley and Kenneth Haigh, is CBS-TV's Playhouse 90 production for Thursday, Oct. 29. Sheldon Reynolds will turn out the Desilu Playhouse's first for eign-based drama, "Thunder in the East' in Tangiers and Rome. Filming starts in November. NBC- TV's Bell Telephone special on Nov. 20 will star Vic Damone. Marge and Gower Champion, and will originate in Hollywood for the first time. The blue-eyed 39-year-old, like Steve Alien, found the going too rough against "Maverick, and moved to the 10 p.m. hour. Allen bugged out entirely, switching to Monday nights, leaving Ed Sulli van to battle it out with the pop ular Western series. Neuberqer Praises Conduct Of Ike' During 'K' Visit PORTLAND (UPP Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said today that President Eisenhower conducted himself during the re cent visit of Russian Premier Khrushchev "with wisdom and statesmanship." . .. "This was Mr. Eisenhower at his best," the Oregon Democrat said. Neuberger said he thought the exchange of visits between two chiefs of state .would "rank in history as major turning points, for better or worse, in the cold war.1' Neuberger said in a statement that Eisenhower's idea for the visit was "daring" and added. "Had President Truman under taken this, his political enemies might have accused him of being 'soft' on Communism." The senator predicted a great and hearty welcome for Eisen hower by the Russians. . . j te in NBC-TVs Sunday Showcase production. "Give My Rega-ds to Broadway." on Dec. 6. U.B. Pat 0ft e iffM ei After 25 Years Benny, a genuine expert on the viewing and listening habits of American audiences, believes the change will be for the better. "I'll find out Oct. 4 when our first show goes on the air," he said. "Actually I've wanted the change for five years. ' "We may find an entirely new audience people who never saw me at the earlier hours. We'll lose some of the youngsters, but they were watching 'Maver ick' anyhow. ' "Sure, we wilf lose some view ers who don't stay up late, but at least our audience won't be in the middle of eating dinner." Jack said Sunday and Monday nights are the best TV times available, explaining that most people stay home on Monday as evidence by poor theater and restaurant business. . , "Sunday is a good day because of its importance. It affords a definite break in the living pat tern of the public." he said. Benny refused to comment on ratings, saying, "I never pan the ratings unless I'm first or second on the list. If a performer is any lower than that everyone thinks it's sour grapes. I don't think they're accurate because viewers may have their sets on and not be watching." The new time slot will not af fect the content of Jack's regular half-hour shows. "I've always tried to keepjhe show sophisticated," he said. "Probably the studio audience will be of a higher caliber, but the show won't be any dirtier just bocause it goes on after most kids are in bed."
