TELEVISION IN REVIEW
Actress Kim Novak Will Show
Brains In Addition To Beauty
Bw VERNO SCOTT
UPI Staff Writtr
HOLLYWOOD 'I' PI' A
tolttnin eyed Kim Novak is d
elumorizing herself to prove she
is more than a beautiful Rirl who
haien8 to find herself in front
of a movie camera.
Curled up on the while rue of
hue living room, the platinum
blonde sipped a cup of coffi-e.
She wore a pair of form-fitting
black bullfighter pants, a
blue shirt itantaluingly unbut
toned! and that was all not even
a pair of slippers. Other than a
smudge of lipstick, the actress
wore no makeup.
For the first time in her young
life Kim has experienced critical
praise or her atting in "Middle
of the Night." She is determined
to prove her performance opposite
Frederic March was no fluke.
Learnad From Early Parts
"They gave me a chance to act
for a change," she said. "But I
don't regret my earlier roles.
I've learned from them. While
other newcomers were studying
acting in schools' I was learning
my trade as the cameras were
turning
"My success came too fast, and
I was unprepared for it," Kim
continued.
"I'm glad I didn't start at the
top because there would have
been oo place to go. Now, I feel,
my career is building. I am tak
ing my time and growing as a
performer slowly."
It's taken Kim 11 pictures and
some five years to break away
from her glamour girl reputation.
Arid in her next movie she again
steps up in class. Her co-star ia
Columbia's "Strangers Whea We
Meet,'' is Kirk Douglas. Her role
is highly dramatic.
Adjusting Personal Llf ,
La Novak, like Marilyn Monro
befo-e ier, also is readjusting her
personal life.
"I've never beet a light-hearted
person," she explained, "and I've
never had much confidence in my
self. Even today I'm not sure I'm
meant for this kind of life.
"So I'm selling my house and
moving into a small apartment.
The less comfortably 1 live the
more willing I am to work hard
and improve myself as an ac
tress. I want to look at life and
the world not have people look
ing at me all the time.
"My only real goal U proving
to myself that I'm doing the best
job possible. At the beginning I
was painting my characters with
only one color. As I go along I'm
picking up more colors.''
