UPI He's taketo five teams to bowl games in the last 11 years, and may have wrapped up another trip by scoring an upset in the very first game of the season. That's Frank Howard of Clem son,; one of football's all-time great tutors. He is honored today by United. Press International as college football's "coach of the week" for Clemson's 20-18 tri umpti over North Carolina which put"Clemson in the driver's seat for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. The advance dope on the title fight in the strong ACC tabbed Cleijison and North Carolina as co-favorites, with Duke a strong contender. A schedule freak pitted the ) co-favorites in the opening game of the season. With Jim Hickey coaching North Carolina in place of the late Jim Tatum, North Carolina was a five-point pick last Satur day .on its home field. But Clem son "won when it halted Bob El liott), on the two-yard line on a two-point conversion attempt with 80 seconds left. Howard, the . balding, puckish veteran whose reputation as a dinner whr matches his brilliant coaching record, didn't see the game as an upset because "I nev er entered one yet I didn't think I cou'd win." And the record shows that How ard always has had a good reason to expect victory. His career total of 107 victories is exceeded by only,' five other active coaches in the nation Jess Neely of Rice 176, , Eddie Anderson of Holy Cross 169, Wally Butts of Geor gia 325, Bud Wilkinson of Okla homa 114. and Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech 111. over Holy Cross, Syracuse over Kansas, Penn over Lafayette.
