High Ratev Of Businass Activity
Is Expected To Continue In U.S.

talk of tight money and the high
money rates that accompany il
reflect one thing in pa'ticulnr
high rate of business activity,
and more of the same to come.
One can find any number of
experts to shout loudly about
high money rates, but it's diffi
cult to find a business pessimist.
Sources close to the Federal
Reserve System aitieipnte a fur
ther sharp rise in business ' ac
tivity once the steel strike ends
if it is settled within a reasona
bly short time. "
Federal Reserve officials hold
that ample credit will be avail
able for the autumn seasonal de
mands, and they are expected to
be large.
The New York Federal Reserve
Bank and its September review
noted that strikes in the metal
industries introduced some cross
currents into an otherwise sforig
ly advancing economy. It found
the impact of the strikes on the
economy as a whole "was still
relatively minor at the end of
August."
U.S. Economy Is Tough

deep in the structure of Nikita
S. Khrushchev's visit to the
United States is a disturbing fact
as dangerous as a ticking bomb.
It is this:
The Soviet people ' apparently
have been led to expect great,
immediate and concrete results
from the Eisenhower-Khrushchev
exchange of visits. Worse, they
are being fed an exaggerated
story of the warmth and enthusi
asm with which Khrushchev has
been received by street crowds.
Ovations for Khrushchev from
the curb side crowds are what
Russians have been reading about
in their official newspapers. Any
American eye-ball, ear-drum wit
ness of the distinguished visitor's
,. Washington reception knows there
was neither ovation nor warmth
for Khrushchev, only curiosity
and courtesy.
Chili and courteous are the
words for the greeting Khrush
chev received from the thou
sands who watched his Washing
ton arrival. Courteous and sf.m
are the words to describe Presi
dent Eisenhower as the welcom
ing host. If that is not the way
the Russian people are hearing
it, then there must be reasons.
Reasons For Rust Lint
The reasons well may be
these:
That the Russian government
is making a propaganda play in
support of its line that the people
of the United Slates are sym
pathetic to and support the ob
jectives of the Soviet Union. '
A propaganda play to show
that the American opponents- of
the Soviet Union are a lot of war
mongering millionaires and mili
tarists who will be responsible if
not much comes from the Ik'e-K
exchange.
A propaganda play to show
that the American people would
love Mr. K and his Kremlin as
sociates if, only, the master of
the American people would per
mit them to know the truth.
This is very dangerojs propa
ganda, indeed, especially if it
works. If it does work, the Rus
sian people will vastly underesti
mate the determination of the
American people to protect their
way of life and to fight for it,
if need be.
If the Russian people do so
underestimate the American point
of view, so much easier will it
be for the Kremlin to torment
international relations with more
crises, threats of calamities, need
ling and the like such as the
near-hot war which Khrushchev
brought about with respect to
Berlin. '
Dangerous Misconception
The Russian people might not
greatly fear a threat of war ip
which they believed th eiemy
would be only half hearted or
less in resistance. Whatever may
be the reasons, the Russian peo
ple are getting a distorted report
of the manner in which Ameri
cans have received Communism's
top man.

"The Bache Review," published
hy the stock exchange house ol

would seem to be trying to tell us
to look for a record level of pros
perity this winter, perhaps with
the economy climbing to 169-165
as measured by the Federal Re
serve Boa'd index of industrial
production."
K. J. Obal. senior economist in
the Ford Motor Co. economics
analysis department predicts
that if a steel settlement is
reached before the end of this
month, the nation's economy will
soar to record highs in both the
fourth quarter of 1959 and the
first quarter of 1900.
Barron's notes: "Manifest con
fidence of business in its capital
expansion program and the con
fidence of consumers, reflected
in automobile purchases and ag
gregate retail sales, support' the
opinion that the boom in business
can soon take off anew."
So it goes. One could fill reams
with favorable business comment
and find but few adverse state
ments. This array of comment should
prove the point that tight credit
reflects a highly prosperous bus
iness situation. If business were
tending down interest rates would
fall and money would become
plentiful.
