'Run-Away' Cop To Face Wife, Kids CHICAGO HI'P-A New York policeman who faked his own su- icide so he could run off with his blonde sweetheart said today he .'would go back to face the music not to mention his wife and ' four children. The now-unemployed policeman. Kichard Supple, 28. and his girl i friend, divorcee Jacqueline McEr Ican, 24. were believed to have flown back to New York after surrendering to Chicago police. But a check of airline reserva- . tion lists failed to turn up the names of the couple, who disap peared again after telling news men, "We still love each other, but we'll go back." Supple Friday revealed he and Jacqueline had been in Chicago since July 29, nine days after he faked his own drowning on Rock away Beach on Long Island. Chicago Police Lt. Edward Cul leeny said Supple told him "he grew tired of his family and kids and became enraptured with the girl. But afterwards he grew tirsd of running around too. He told me, "I've got to go back and face the music." In New York, Supple's wife, Madeline, said she had begun to believe her husband was dead and was stunned by the news that he was not only alive but had run off with another woman. Asked if she would take him b:ck. she said. "I don't know. I don't want to do anything until I talk to him. I am only thinking now of my children." Supple and Mrs. McErlean came to Chicago and took an apart ment while she got a job as a receptionist. She quit that job Sept. 1 and their savings gradually dwindled. i Movie Wife Of Douglas Relates Story HOLLYWOOD UPH "I cried out for the maid and then began breathing into Paul's mouth in an attempt to save him. I guess I must have kept it up for four or five minutes, but he did not move." In these words Jan Ster ling told of her efforts to save the life of her husband, actor Paul . Douglas. Douglas, 52, died Friday morn ing in the arms of his platinum ' blonde" wife at their Hollywood Hills home. The burly onetime professional football player-sports-caster-radio announcer-turned ac tor was stricken by a heart seiz- ' ure as he was getting out of bed at 8 a.m. Despite- the fact Miss Sterling thought her husband was dead she continued the mouth-to-mouth re ' suscitation and massaged t h e 'area around the actor's heart. A fire department rescue squad, 'summoned to the New Orleans colonial-type home, was met by the distraught 36-year-old actress who said, "he's inside, please hurry." Firemen Bob Hollis and Truet Sfcarkman went to Douglas' bed room where they found bj$ nude body on the floor, covered by a blanket. Hollis checked Douglas' heart and pulse, then told Miss Sterling he apparently was dead. A short time later the family physician. Dr. Lee E. Siegel, ar rived and pronounced the actor dead. Douglas had no previous record of heart trouble. Douglas, hospitalized ' for ex haustion last month, was released when doctors found no serious ail ments. He returned to work de spite advice that he take a long rest. La Grande Observer Established 1836 Entered aa Second Clasa Hatter at the Poat Office of La Grande. Oregon Under the cl of March a, 1897.
