Observer, La Grande, Ore-. What The Communists Are Up To In Asia Is The Big Question Now TOKYO UPl What are the . Communists up to in Asia? That was the big question fol . lowing Premier J a w a h r I a I Nehru's report to the Indian Par- - liament that Ked Chinese forces hud attacked Indian territory at two widely-separated points. . Fighting in Laos, stepped-up - action in the Formosa Strait . threats against the tiny feudal states of Sikkim and Bhutan, . and now the attacks against . India what do they mean? United Press International polled its diplomatic sources in Asian capitals with that question The results were inconclusive No one really knew. Perhaps the only ones who did know were Mao Tse-Tung, Liu Shao-Chi and - Chou En-Lai in Peiping, and pos sibly Nikita Khrushchev in Mos ' cow. Guesses as to what was going ' on ranged from a concentrated, coordinated Communist assault on Western world beliefs before the President Eisenhower-Khrush' chev visits, to an opinion that the India-Laos-Formosa incidents were unrelated and purely coin cidental. But everyone in Asia was urn trhinff closely. Here are some views on the Communist activities in Asia: Similar Situation Last Yoar The Communists always want to increase tension in one area following lessening of tension in another area In this case Asia . after the lull in the Berlin crisis. The same thine happened last year when the Reds launched a bombardment of Quemoy after things had settled down else where There also were those who felt the unrest in Asia was planned to give Nikita Khrushchev a greater talking point an' more chips on the table when he meets with Eisenhower. This view was not shared by others who pointed out the Laos ' trouble started long before there was a hint of an Eisenhower- . Khrushchev meeting and that a 27-shell shelling of Quemoy did I not mean the big bombardment ' was about to start again. But they admitted there was a possibility the increased Laos . fighting, the shelling of Quemoy 1 and the attacks .on . India couia ; signal ' a deliberate . Communist i attempt to step up tensions on - the eve of the meetings. Of all the questions involving , the Communists in Asia the big gest one was "why pick on India?" , India has always been one of , Communist China's best friends , internationally outside the non Communist world. Yearly, she ' calls for the admittance of Red China to the United Nations. Premier Nehru has even been accused of appeasement. Then why attack India? Ovor-Confidenc Blanwd A favorite view was that Com ' munist Chinese leaders have be come cocky. For years they have done just about what they wanted. Korea. Viet Nam, Tibet all were con sidered by many as Communist victories. They were halted at Quemoy last year, but the ques tion was whether the Chinese ' Communists really wanted Que moy. Today, it was Laos and India. Perhaps, said some sources, the CLIP HERE And Mail To Tha Obsarvtr Classified Ad Dpt. Another theory was that the Communists were engaging in oe of their time-practiced ma neuversstirring up trouble out side to disguise trouble at home. Some sources drew a parallel to last year. It was just one year ago that the controversial com mune system was inaugurated in Red China. It immediately ran into trouble, and immediately there was tension in the Formosa Strait. This year, the Communist ecpnomy is not in the best shape. So there was trouble in Southeast Asia. Man Cleared In Slaying By Lie Test HELENA. Mont. H'PIi A lie detector test revealed today that a Californian held for questioning in the Idaho murder of Dr. John Hunt Jr., 37, of Portland, Ore., is innocent. Sheriff Dick Walsh of Kalispcll, after completing the tests late Thursday said of the man, Sam uel McGuffee, "the boy is clean. He was through the area where Hunt was murdered, but he's def initely clean." McGuffee, a 40-year-old itiner ant steeplejack from Lodi, Calif. has been held in the Jefferson county jail in Boulder on a drunk driving charge. The sheriff there, George Paradise, said he would bo released after he completes his 10-day sentence later this week. -' Sheriff Keitli Anderson of Good ing county, Idaho, who came to Montana to question McGuffee, said after the lie test was com pleted: "We have just a few more leads to work on. The way it looks, though, we're up against a brick wall. Swift Plant Is Idled By Strike; 350 Out Of Work PORTLAND YUPI? SomeToO employes of the Swift & Co. meat packinjsoperation here were idled today by a nationwide walkout of members of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and United Packing house Workers unions. Thirty-six Swift plants were struck by the unions. About' 16.- 000 workers were idled across the country. The walkout was called at 12:01 a, m. today after negotiations broke down in Chicago. The film is currently being shown at the Granada theatre in La uranue tnrough Sept. 2. The princess is blessed with three Eodmothers, all of them 3ood fairies, and it is Flora Fauna and Merryweather who provide much of the laughter and drollery to balance the nec essary fury and mis-adventure in the contest between good and evil in which the classic romance is couched. The $6,000,000 production is combined with the adapted score of Tchaikovsky s celebrated Sleep ing Beauty Ballet. Mary Costa is the voice of Aurora. The trio of godmothers, whose voices are those of Verna Felton, Barbara Joe Allen and Barbara Luddy provide the same entertainment delights the Seven Dwarfs eon tributed to "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Flora, Fauna and Merryweath er are plumpish, matronly and very worthy sprites who spirit the infant princess to the forest be yond the castle to protect her from the wicked enchantress. Thfre she grows up believing herself a simple peasant maid, and there she meets and falls in love with a young gallant prince. Sheriff Seeks Motherwell's Extradition ATLANTA UPI California authorities call on Georgia Gov. Ernest Vandiver today to ask that Larry Lord Motherwell be extra dited to Sierra County, Calif., to face murder charges. Johnson of Sierra County said when he arrived here Wednesday night from Washing ton, DC, the home of the 72- year-old widow Motherwell is charged with murdering. Motherwell was arrested Aug 25 by FBI agents at the Atlanta Airport. He was sought by feder al agents on a charge of flight to avoid prosecution. He is held in $50,000 bail. . His alleged victim, Mrs. Pearl IdrrPntney, disappeared last sum mer after taking a motor trip with Motherwell through the South and West. Assessor, Appraiser Attend Convention R. M.
