TELEVISION IN REVIEW,
Dragnet' Boyys Out With
All The Familiar Words
By FRED'DANZIo
UPI Staff Wrllw
NEW YORK UPI Dragnet,
which leaves network TV after
Sept. 13, offered its final first-run
half hour on nbwv Sunday
night.
I watched the proceedings with
mournful mien, for all the famil
iar, time-honored traditions of
Dragnet were there, as always.
There was the drum-de-dum
dum theme, the clip-clop cop
talk, the underplayed scenes
aimed at building tension, the
quick cuts from one closeup to
another, the phrases that have
become catchwords in the native
vernacular . since being introduced
to TV on Jan. 3, 1952:
'The story you are about to see
is true. . .
'This is the city. . .
"My name is Friday . . .
"In a moment, the results of
that trial." ., . . ,
The procedure is as stylized as
a Punch and Judy show and the
Nixon May Speak
At Dedication
Of The Dalles Dam
THE DALLES UPI Dedica
tion date for The Dalles dam on
the Columbia river may be
changed from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10
so Vice President Richard Nixon
can be the featured speaker.
Paul Walden, chairman of the
dedication committee, said word
had been received that Nixon
could appear either on Oct. 10. er
Oct. 24, but would be unablt to
appear on Sept. 26, the previously
scheduled date.
A meeting of the committee" Was
scheduled today to discuss the
matter. Several commitments
have been made for the Sept. 26
date, Walden said. The committee
will have to decide if another
speaker of sufficient- stature- can
be obtained or if a change in
dates to accommodate - Nixon's
schedule will be made.
.- President Eisenhower was in
vited originally but was unable to
appear. .
Gypsy Rose Lee
Taken For Tito
Because Of Car
..LONDON (UPU Gypsy, Rose
Lee said today she got mistaken
tor Marshal Tito in Yugoslavia.
The rather unlikely error, she
sard, occurred when her Rolls
Royce collided with a motorcycle
6n a mountain road above, the
Adriatic Sea. -
She said when she got out, the
motorcyclist and his rider fled on
foot, leaving the bike in the road.
Miss Lee said she drove on 30
miles to the Yugoslav resort town
of Pula, Tito's favorite holiday re
treat, and learned why the two
ran. -.,
plots are as uncomplicated. Sun
day's tale, .a non-nonsense yarn,
showed Jack Webb as Lt. Joe
Friday "busting" a narcotics ring
after posing as a tough-talking
buyer. Some of it was downright
amateurish,, as when the big-time
dope pusher wailed, "I got a good
name In the business." But, as it
was Dragnet's last gasp, I didn't
mind. Before Webb chugs off the
network, I'd like to toss him a
salute. His format raised some
standards on TV - and also gave
comedians plenty of fodder. Webb
drops out as the new-style crime
shows, featuring a cool ' private
eye, a cool blonde and o,n cool
jazz, move in. But . none of the
new fellows have had the impact
on TV thut Webb has had. He con
find solace in that on his way to
the museum. . .and toe bonk.
Short Shots: The engrossing
film clips of the . recent . street
demonstrations in Little' Hock,
Ark., shown., on NBC-TV's Chat
Huntley Reporting Sunday, includ
ed some profanity rarely heard
on TV. , ,
Robert Horton played himself
on CBS-TV's Markham Saturday
night and was given a brief, in
consequential part to play.. Why
brothert ,
NBC-TV finally ran Midwestern
Hayrlde's Roaring 20s show on
Sunday after twice pre-empting it
for special telecasts. Preemption
was the right idea for this show,
I'd say, as the guitars and ac
cordion music slowed some roar
ing songs down to a. murmur.
The Channel Swim: NBC-TV
has acquired the rights to eight
motion pictures owned by the
David 0. Selznick Company. The
properties, which . include '"Inter
mezzo," "Rebecca," "Portrait of
Jennie,"' "The- Paradine Case"
and "Notorious," will be adapted
as live TV dramas- during the
1960-61 season. - -
One of the upcoming Omnibus
specials . next season may star
Harry Belafonte singing Rodgers
and Hart tunes. Cliff Arquette, as
Charlie Weaver, will be the grand
marshal when CBS-TV presents
the Miss America parade on
Tuesday, Sept. 8. As Cliff Ar
quette, he'll be a judge for the
Sept. 12 finals. Groucho Marx vis
