Our mother is silk with cancer and I overheard soni9 rela tives say she probably won't live more than two months. The woman who takes care of my brother and me is very mean. Yesterday I got a letter from a boy who is a junior counselor at a Bey Scout camp. This woman op ened the letter before I got It. I didn't think she had any tight to do this and I told . her' so. She called me a sassy brat and hit .ne on the back with a frying pan. I almost passed out from the pain. Today I can hardly walk. Mom has a very nice sister but she's so busy going to the hospital every day I hate to bother her with my troubles. I'm afraid after Mom passes on this woman will be in charge of us forever. What shall I do? Need Friend. Dear Need a Friend: Tele phone or visit yeur aunt imme diately and tell her of the frying pan incident. The woman should not be in charge of children. I'm certain if yeur aunt knew the facts she would make different arrangements for you and your brother at once. Dear Ann: I'm 29, single and have been seeing a lot of a man 38. He is divorced. I never was a popular girl and to be perfectly honest, this is the first man who has suggested marriage. . . f J Your SCHOOL SUPPLIES are igfp YOU! We are prepared to meet your- needs for all grades! The trouble Is he gets quite drunk occasion ally (about twice a week l and he is like a different person. When I'm with him (and he Is sober) everything is grand and I'm blissfully happy. But when we are apart and I think about his unattractive side I become filled with doubts. My girl friend tells me there's no such thing as a perfect man that I'm childish and short sighted. She says 1 11 regret being so fussy one day. Advise- me, please and remember, there's no one else in sight and I'm crowding 3a Sorely Perplexed. Dear Sorely: A man whe gets "quite drunk" twice a week is net my idea of a red-hot cendi date for a lifetime partner. Yeu are "happy" when you're with him because he is a man, and te use yeur words "the only one in sight." But when reality sets in, yeu see him as he is com plete with severely neurotic ten dencies. Tell Jonathan yeu won't marry a man with an unresolved drinking problem but yeu are willing to give him a chance to dry out. If he proves he can stay off the eauce (with or without outside help) for six months, then consider marriage. But net until. Thursday. The videotape truck, with Jiick Linkletter at the wheel, headed for the pad of Lawrence Lipton. who seems to be the Albert Schwiltzer of the beatniks. You know what beatniks are: Bohemi ans who look down and out but are really just out 'way out and never down. Lipton, an aging non-conformist. sat on an aging couch wearing a conformist Ivy League cap. Next to him lounged a long haired girl identified as "Leono ra." She was reading a book. (Kerouac? Ginsberg? We'll never know.t Lipton told us that beatniks ab hor "the commercial rat race." As he spoke, he carefully held up to the camera his latest book (Has he been sneaking peeks at TV) A beatnik for 30 yea-s, Lip ton knocked such institutions as home, school and church for hav ing "brought us to the brink of total destruction." This was followed by: Jack: "Am I a square? I enjoy having a home, an auto. . ." Lipton: You're a square. But you're not a conformist because you enjoy your work." Having thereby offered partial endorsement to young Linklettcr's career, Lipton added: "He who sleeps on the floor has no fear of failing out of bed." "Confucius? asked Jack. "Old Polish proverb." said Lip ton. There followed a brief interview with a 29-year-old goateed musi cian, the father of two, who is experimenting with bongo sounds at Lipton's workshop. How is he paying for r""C"l"s? "Iticht now." he explained "I'm getting state niil became of a buck in jury." I thought it was nice to know that taxpaying squa'es have some valu? for beatniks. The diummcr. who wore a clean SAcuUhirt, resented being called "bi at." "It's your label," he said. "It's my life." Said Litton of his protege: I "He's seck:ng salvation. Beat is a religious exwrience for him." Next, Leonora put aside her book and joined the group. She mentioned that she "fed Brendan Bchan" while in Dublin, but she wasn't asked to elaborate. She said she enjoyed her life of dedi cated poverty! "Money is not pov erty." she said, and I found my self in ag'eement. This brief Jack and the Beat nik episode is one reason I find Linliletter's morning show stimu lating. He'll never plunge deeply into a topic, but his little brushes with interesting characters serve to arouse curiosity and broaden our base of experience. I hope someday Jack and his videotape truck go cross-country, town by town, city by city. If he keeps the show authentic-looking, un hokey, and sincere, he'll succeed where Wide, Wide World failed. The Channel Swim: The first of two full-hour programs on Afri can nationalism will be presented on NBC-TV 0:1 Sunday night. Sept. 13. The scries, narrated by Chet. Huntley, is called "Emerging Africa". Jack Benny and his CBS TV production crew will be in In dependence, Mo., on Sept. 2-3 to tape a sequence with former President Harry Truman at the Truman Memorial Library. The show will be seen on Sunday, Oct. 18.
