show is Sam's subtle way of. say
ing. "We're dead, folks."
The show that replaced Arthur
Godfrey last April is scheduled to
die next month and it is doubt
ful that even the last-minute letter-writing
flurry can change
things.
The shackled message serves ns
the handwriting on the wall inso
far as improved standards for
daytime TV are concerned. The
mild bits of rocking chair wisdom
aid dinner . table . deep-thinking

son and his predecessor, Godfrey,
are finished. The daytime "talk
show." is clumming up.
Despite h i g h-sounding state
ments from networks, it seems
that the daytime viewer still is
regarded, basically, as a creature
who prefers the formula shows
the ones that give away prizes or
deal with broken hearts and brok
en dreams. If this is not tiie case,
why do?s a common sense show
lose its toe-hold in daytime TV
after only a five-month run.
The final insult of course, is in
the choice of a replacement for
Levenson: Heruns of the silly De
cember Bride series, with all its
uncanny mediocrity and canned
laughter.
Now, I'm not suggesting that
Levenson's is TV's finest half
hour 'although it looks great next
to December Briilei. But he has
attempted to deal with some as
pects of American life that need
discussion. And, despite a woeful
start, in which Levenson tried too
hard to be funny and gave his
guests very little time to talk, he
has made the right moves and
developed his talents and come
up with a tight fast-moving little
show.
The show has room for im
provement, of course, and I would
like to see him dump the class
room props and get a kitchen or
living room set for his gab-fests.
The apple on teacher's desk is a
mite too precious and teacher's
desk seems to me to be a talk
preventer instead of a talk-en-courager.
But it's too late now, I suppose.

The political battle for control
of Sicily apparently has justj start
ed. Thus far, it has been a rough.
no-holds-barred fight in which the
anti-Communists have suffered re
peated defeats and undermined
their own prestige through a se
ries ot grave mistaxes. tsui mcy
are reported determined to fight
on against the Keds with every
available weapon of political ob
structionism and sabotage. The
Communists scored last week
with their machiavellian master
piece when they joined to elect
a regional government of "Chris
tian Socials" and right wing turn
coats under Silvia Milazzo. In re
turn, Milazzo gave the Commu
nists and left wing Socialists the
support they needed to pack the
seven legislative committees of
the regional assembly. The catch
is that Milazzo's government has
only a one-vote margin in the as
sembly and can be overthrown by
the Communists at any lime. The
Communists and Socialists, on the
other hand, cannot be dislodged
from the legislative committees
which are elected for four-year
terms, and thus control the real
law-making power of Sicily.

no compassion for its needy citi
zens. After President Charles de
Gaulle visits Algeria on Aug. 27,
the French are expected to make
new efforts to arrange a meeting
between "le grand Charlie" and
King Mohammed V of Morocco in
an effort to arrange some kind
of Algerian settlement. Such a
meeting appeared imminent less
than a month ago when Moham
med was in Paris for medical
treatment. But he left for home
suddenly without seeing De
Gaulle.
Agreement with Tue Philippines
over the long-tangled issue of U.S.
military bases now seems farther
away than ever. U.S. Ambassador
Charles Bohlen reportedly does
not expect to reach any kind
of agreement. And certain influ
ential Filipinos apparently are de
termined to prevent agreement at
all costs so the issue can be kept
alive for future troublesome use.
