It's peculiar specimen, found throughout the United States. which goes into, hibernation dur- lug the summer moiuns. 11 is either black and white or colored and sometimes sends out a queery cry that sounds some thing like: "Remember the resi duals." Monday niiiht. through a quirk, a non-rerun came out of hiding and nestled in the boughs of CBS TVs JJesilu Playhouse. The occa sion was Westinghou's Soath sponsored TV drama and it was marked with an exercise labeled, "Two Counts of Murder It was a rather curious choice for a celebration a squashy colloid composed of equal parts of non-solulile dialog and pasty plot. It had something or other to do with the grandson of a 'po litical boss who was accused of murder and who was prosecuted by a young district attorney who the boss thought he had in his I pocket and who . .and who. . .aw, the heck with it. The cast, engulfed in tins clab ber, kind of paddled around un certainly. The swimmers includ ed Raymond Massey, David Jans sen, La-ry Dobkin and Whitney Blake. Short Shots: Arlcne Francis was an engaging addition to the NBC-TV Jack Paar Show Monday nicht she's one of the few wom en around who know how to tell a story well. Monday night's CBS-TV repeat episode on the Jo seph Cotten Show was written by l.iam O'Brien, brother of Kdmond O'Brien who directed and starred in the vehicle the most inter esting thing about the play was the surprisingly tiny role assigned Shepperd Strudwick . It's a strange weakness on my part, I suppose, but I continue to enjoy ABC-TV's Pantomime Quiz. I liked this bit which Hans Conried tried to act out Monday night: "Morse's first telegraph mes sage: Would you believe it I have a code." shortly confirming the report that the Sylvania awards are dead. Linda Darnell has finished film ing an episode for ABC-TV's 77 Sunset Strip. Esther Williams is a good pos sibility to host the next CBS-TV daytime special. Woman!, on Sept. 17. The NBC-TV American Heritage series is making a pitch fur Lee Cobb to play the title role in "Ulysses S. Grant" on Feb. 21. Ralph Bellamy who'll star in NBC-TV's biography of Thomas Jefferson Oct. la will also play Jefferson in a bit part on NBC TV's biography of Eli Whitney on Nov. 22. v Th Channel Swim: Split Per sonality, a new Goodson-Todman show, replaces County Fair on NBC-TV Sept. 28. Ben Gazzara will star in "Body and Soul," the kBS-TV Du Pont .Show of the .Month listed for Sept. 28. Harry Belafonte has been ap proached to star in "A Toast To Jerome Kern," an NBC-TV Tues day night Ford special to be seen Sept. 22 Kay Thompson will choreograph the show. Marlene Dietrich has turned down the hostess job on the upcoming CBS TV Friday Revlon special series because of money the show is now trying to land Ginger Rogers as hostess. Jack Benny has signed on for A Night At The Palace," a Ford special which George Burns will host on NBC-TV this season. An announcement will be released Ashland Fire Is Controlled Short Of City By United Press International A fire which showered ashes over much of Ashland and at one time threatened the city, was con trolled Sunday night. All other fires in the state were in the mop-up stages, but fire danger remained high and state restrictions were tightened in some areas. Some 5,000 acres of brush and timber were burned by the flames before U.S. Forest Service and State Forestry Department crews trailed the blaze, in hills west of Ashland. A total of 39 men fought the blaze which began Saturday. At least two buildings wore destroyed by the fire. Elsewhere in the state, a 1,500 acre fire near Tyee in Douglas county was in the mop-up stage Sunday night. Restrictions Put On A 700-acre fire in the Malheur National Forest east of Seneca was reported trailed and a 30 acre grass fire near Powers in Coos county was being controlled A fire which threatened the town of Beatty northwest of Klamath Falls Saturday was con fined to about 20 acres. It burned an old schoolhouse gym. The State Forestry Department announced new closure restric tions for power-driven machinery and equipment within one-eighth mile of forest lands in zones 10. 11, 13. 15 and (8 in southwestern Oregon. Operating permits in these zones will be susi)ended be tween the hours of 1 p.m. and midnight or any time when the humidity drops to 30 per cent. Another requirement said that a watchman, who is able to oper ate fire equipment, be on duty at operation sites until 8 p pi. dur ing days of operation. water power generates more than 99 per cent of the electricity in Switzerland, Norway and Swe den, but less than three per cent in Britain, Denmark and Belgium. On the upper level it has served primarily thus far to point up at least two primary difficulties in United States and Soviet Russian attempts to reach any kind of an understanding. On the lower level, we have the ordinary Russian housewife show ering courtesies upon Mrs. Rich ard Nixon when she visits the big Moscow department store, GUM. They greet her as an outsider with whom they would like to be friendly. Friendliness is a basic commod ity of the Russian people. And so it has been exhibited at the U.S. Exhibition. Russians pore over the Sears Roebuck cata logue. They argue the merits of white versus colored tiles in the home. American automobibs fas cinate them. They seize upon the opportunity to talk with bi lingual American guides. But the differences also are basic. ' Ore not usually taken into con sideration is the Russian language itself. A Rich Language f 1 It is a rich language, many of whose words have no exact trans lation into a single English lan guage synonym. This correspondent has listened many times while a Russian translator searched in vain for the English counterpart to a word or phrase in a Russian . speech. The second misunderstanding, if so it can be called, arises from a total lack of trust on both sides. The United States recalls with justified bitterness the failure of past understandings with the So viets where the Reds have used every legalistic loophole for their own advantage. (Kit lug Ii made up from Information by Televitien Station and Its accuracy cannot be guirtntttg by the ll vrtnde Evening Obterver It is this which is one of the current sources of disagreement between the United States and Britain? Britain, anxious for a summit conference, would accept Russian verbal promises that there will bo no interference with Western rights in Berlin so long as the subject is under conversa tion. The United States says, put it in writing. As leader of the Western world since World War II. the United States has had more experience than any other nation in dealing with Communist promises and the fireworks displays of Communist oratory. Therefore it was not surprising that when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev needled Nixon with a mention of Russia's nuclear weap ons, Nixon replied that "we have 'them i, too, and Khrushchev stormed: "We will answer your threats with threats." The walkout involving nearly all the union's 1,200 members end ed when the Air Force agreed to let TWU drivers the place of the airmen truck drivers.
