WILLIAM EWALD SAYS:
Andy's Show Best In Long
But Not So Hot Summer TV
By WILLIAM EWALD
United Press International
NEW YORK 1 CPU In this,
the long but not so hot summer
of TV, the CBS-TV Andy Williams
SHow bulks as the class of the
season.
It is a show fresh of aspect and
buoyant of manner. It is pack
aged by craftsmen with a feeling
for light and space and who obvi
ously go to some pains to broom
its parts clean. It has as its prin
cipal tenant. Andy Williams, a
singer who not only enjoys his
work but breathes intellige'c?
throuRh it. Williams is one of a
handful of male pop sinners

Frank Sinatra and Uel Tormo
are others who manage to com
bine urgency with casualness.
Tuesday night's show, the fourth
of the season, was not a terribly
robust entry, but it did boast sev
eral engaging segme'ts. Williams.
who looks a little like a hip owl,
led the way, leveling in on such
goodies as "I Get A Kick Out Of
You," "Making Whoopee'' and
"April In Paris" with elegant
skill. You can't hardly get tunes
like them any more.
On board, too, was Julie Lon
don, a vocalist with a slight voice
but a fairly sensitive attack, who
slithered through Gershwin's
"How Long Has This Been Going
On" and a lightly swing version
of 'Comin' Through The Rye.'' In
the first number. Miss London
was surrounded by a parliament
of pilla'S. In the second, by a
troup? of kilted dancers. Both
chunks of staging were handsome
ly uncluttered, the sort of produc
tion that permitted the eye to
brood comfortably while the ear
was sprung free for listening.
There were some less felicitous
spots on the show the grotesquer
ies of Cab Calloway and a laJy
pianist. Norma Douglas, misla
beled as a jazz artist but I
won't dwell on them. What is im
portant is the core of the show it
self and it, very simply, is a
beauty a credit to Williams and
to Perry Lnfferty and Norman
.lowison, the men who put it to
gether backstage.
