Observer, La Grande, Ore., Tues., July 28, 1959 Pge 7 Mary's Peak Facilities Bring Conflict PORTLAND iL'PIt The U.S. Forest Service anil the Bonneville Power Administration indicated today they have different ideas about what should be done with Mary's peak, a 4100 foot high mountain 2U miles west of Cor vallis. The conflict involves a BPA plan to construct a radio facility on top of the peak. The installa tion would aid BPA communica tions and maintence crews; and the Bureau of land Management and Kill have expressed an in terest in sharing the station But the forest service wants to have the site withdrawn for pur poses of recreatiopn. A spokesman said any more facilities might "interfere with each other and conflict with recreation." - The city of Corvallis objected to the BPA proposal on the grounds that waste disposal might con taminate a 7000-acre city water i shed on the mountain's east slope. High Winds Spur Fires PENDLETON iLPIl High winds ami drying weather condi tions combined Monday to spur at least five separate fires in East ern Oregon out of control for hours. The largest of the blazes broke out shortly afternoon at the Dick and Bill Purchase ranch near Cayuse about to miles east of Pendleton. The fire swept up from the Umatilla River banks and into about 300 to 350 acres of ripe standing wheat. Ranchers and commercial Tirms dispatched trucks and men as the fire rushed across a road, through a pea field and into another wheat field where it was finally brought un der control. Pendleton Grain Growers (lis patched several trucks to help fight the fire and were aided by fire fighters of the Umatilla In dian service. Officials reported that two old unoccupied ranch houses were destroyed . A smaller fire at the north city limits of Pendleton threatened a private home for awhile Monday. Starting in grass near Riverside, the blaze burned a garage and tool shed before the Pendleton fire department and volunteers could extinguish it. , In a housing addition on the . south side of Pendleton, a grass fire roared through four acres of unused area before being brought under control. Officials of the I'kiah Lumber company said a grass fire broke out about 2 p. m. and burned some 15 acres before it stopped. The fire, however, was turned away from standing timbers stacked at the lumber company office, just west of Pendleton. ftT.Noraia or annI'al btatkukvi THE CENTRAL NATIONAL LIFE ; INSURANCE COMPANY OF OMAHA at OuM. la ch attu Nftetftu. to (M IMHIM I'MBIIIKM f U ltl f . .U4.Tlt CmIi and bank deposits PreoLtuai due tod deferred (lift tad MrldMt and Hee.li hi InlarMl and ttftar lutettmeot 4 MM . larawa due Ad accrued U.T t TataJ mmu t l.m.llt.H UAIILITIES. Enthusiasm for statehood was so high that Secretary of Slate Ed Johnson predicted 90 per cent of registered voters would cast ballots to elect a governor, lieu tenant governor, two U. S. sena tors, a U.S. congressman and 62 state legislators. Virtually every race and na tion which has contributed to the population of the islands is repre sented on the ballot. The only contest between two Caucasians is that for governor. The appoint ed territorial governor, William F. Quinn. a Republican, and the territory's non-voting delegate to Congress, John A. Burns, a Dem ocrat, are in a close race for that job. A Hawaiian born Japanese- American, Daniel K. lnouye, a Democrat, is expected to win election to the House of Repre sentatives over Republican Charles 11. Silva. For Senate seat "A," Demo crat Frank Fasi, a Connecticut born businessman, is opposed by millionaire Chinese-American Hi- ram Fong, Republican, in what is exiecled to be another close race. Former Gov. Oren Long, a Democrat, is expected to defeat Wilfred C. Tsukiyama, Republi can, for Senat seat "B. Candidates for lieutenant gover nor are James Kealoha, Republi can, a Hawaiian-American, and Mitsuyuki Kido, a Japanese- American. The new state has 183,000 reg istered voters, and Johnson pre dicted 165,000 will vote today. Among them are descendants of early Hawaiian kings and New England missionaries, English traders and whalers of all na tions, laboring immigrants from Portugal, Puerto Rico and every nation of Asia. Other cities recicving pay ments were: Elgin $1,771.77; lm- blcr $157.39; Island City $339.34; Summerville $54.86; Union $1,- 479.02. These payments are for the first half of 1959. Payments are nearly eight per cent greater than those for the same period last year.
