FAILED TO SEE ALL THAT ROT LONDON (UPI) Minister of Housing Henry Brook ad mitted Monday that he had neglected the home front. "Owing to full preoccupa tion of government business" he told a group of builders, "I failed to observe that dry rot had gotten into my house." Ike Nominates Mueller For Commerce Post WASHINGTON (UPI) Presi dent Eisenhower today nominated Undersecretary of Commerce Henry Mueller, 65, to be secretary of Commerce. Mueller succeeds Lewis L. Strauss, former Atomic Energy Commission chairman who re signed after his nomination was rejected by the Senate. The new appointee was a Grand Rapids, Mich., furniture manufac turer before he became assistant secretary of commerce for domes tic affairs in 1956. He was named undersecretary last Nov. 3. During World War II, Mueller served as president and general manager of Grand Rapids Indus tries, a group of wood products manufacturers who pooled their facilities to make troop-carrying gliders and other aircraft equip ment needed in the war. Mueller is an Episcopalian, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of Tau Beta Pi national honorary engineering fraternity, and of the Congressional Country Club. He plays golf and bridge and is a certified private pilot. He was one of the organizers of the Civil Air Patrol and once a group com mander. Mueller is also a former district governor of Rotary International Fire Strikes 250 Acres Of Wheat PENDLETON UPI Umatilla county's first major wheat fire of the year Monday burned more than 250 acres of ripe, standing wheat near here. In less than an hour flames blackened the wheat owned by Raymond Rees east of the Pendle ton city limits. Temperatures of 105 degrees and west winds of 15 miles per hour hampered the fire fighting operation but the blaze was con tained to the south and a gravel road was expected to halt its spread to the north. About 95 persons fought the fire. Rees said the fire started when a load of wheat caught fire on a truck, apparently from the vehi cle's exhaust, and flames spread to the standing wheat. Olympic Head Gives National China Boost PHILADELPHIA UPD -Chances of Nationalist China competing in the 1960 summer Olympic games in Rome were given a boost today by Avery Brundage, president of the Inter national Olympic Committee. Brundage, of Chicago, said here Sunday he will "recommend and support" recognition of the Nationalist Chinese as Olympic competitors under the name of "The Olympic Committee of the Republic of China." The statement by Brundage came as something of a surprise in sports circles, for he has been criticized in various quar ters ever since May 28 of this year when the IOC voted at its meeting in Munich to cease rec ognition of the Nationalists under the name "China." D'Autremont Taking Steps Toward Parole PORTLAND it'l'Ii - Ray D'Autremont. one of three broth ers convicted of murder in the 1923 tram robbery in the Siskiyou mountains in Southern Oregon, took a step Monday toward pos sible parole from Oregon State prison where he has served 32 years of a life term. Kay appeared in federal court here before Federal Judge Gus J. Solomon to ask for un early trial on a charge of assault on a mail clerk. He hoes that disposal of the charge will pave the way for parole. The 59-yearold D'Atitremonl's late brother, Hugh, followed the same path to freedom. Hugh was released last January and died in San Francisco in March. The third brother, Roy, is in the state hospital at Salem. Ray and Roy are twins. . Ray asked Judge Solomon to accept a plea of nolo contendre, which implies acceptance of pun ishment without acknowledgment of guilt. The judge told D'Autremont he must plead either guilty or not guilty and George Rhoten, Salem attorney, was appointed counsel. The two will appear in court again when D'Autremont decides what course to follow. Judge Solomon, if D'Autremont is found guilty of the charge, coiBd place him on probation or sentence him to a maximum of 25 years in prison. Plane's Seat Belts Save Lives Of 69 BOSTON (UPI) A modern airliner's simplest safety device the se belt was credited to day with saving 69 persons from injury when the nose wheel of an American Airlines plane collapsed on landing Monday night. The front end of the four-en-gined DC-6 nosed down with a jar when the wheel mechanism gave way 'seconds after the craft touched the landing strip at Lo gan International Airport at 150 miles an hour on a flight from New York. Morton Nash of New York, said there was a "terrific vibration" as the nose scraped along the runway. "We were all pitched for ward, but our safety belts kept us in our seats. The only injury that resulted occurred when Michael Ramos, 22, of New York, fell as he jumped from the forward cargo door to the ground and suffered a bruised knee. The passengers had high praise for the pilot, Capt. John Harris, 43, of Chicago, who brought the ship to, a grinding stop within 150 yards. After bringing the craft to a halt, Harris popped out of the cabin and calmly told the shaken passengers, "I think you had bet ter', get out of this exit right here." He pointed to the cargo door. Horse Team Bolts On Disneyland Stagecoach ANAHEIM. Calif. (UPI) Eleven persons, including six chil dren, suffered minor injuries Monday at Disneyland when the four-horse team of a stagecoach bolted. The injured were the driver and 10 of the 12 passengers in the stagecoach at the famed amuse ment park. Several were thrown to the ground when the stagecoach collapsed after its undercarriage was torn off by the wild horses.
