land house and the one in Itussia
'Splitniks.'' They aren't split lev
els but ranch type, all on one
floor. The "Splitnik" designation
comes from the fact that the
home is split in half by a 10 foot
corridor for display puroses.
It is estimated that three and
a half million Itussians will view
the interior of the home ut the
Moscow Kxhihition from this cor
ridor. Russians couldn't buy homes
like these because they just
aren't available. Russia builds
apartments and the people live
collectively and not in individual
houses.
Can't Afford Itl
And a Russian couldn't afford
such a house. American steel
executives who visited Russia last
year reported that the general
superintendent of a big steel com
pany receives the equivalent of
$500 a month. He could handle
the payments. But the general
run of workers average just about
half that sum, including bonuses.
Their 58 a week just wouldn't
pay the bills.
And in Russia none of the elec
trical appliances included in the
home is available. The Russian
apartment at the Russian Fair in
New York doesn't show any ap
pliances. Those who have traveled
in the Soviet Union report lack
of the things Americans take for
granted in their homes.
