Included were sophisticated, lovely tunes such as "Scarlet Itiu Ixms." "1 Feel Pretty" and "This Is My Beloved'' all awkwardly staged i; a ballet sequence to an excerpt from "The Nutcracker Suite." plus some of the usual slush that adults believe kids love to hear: "Some Day My Prince. Will Come" and "When You Wish I pon A Star." Because the show aimed high perhaps too high, judging by some of the selections I find myself wondering if producer Fred Heider was saying, in ef lect: wouldn't it be nice if kids could learn to dig this music, or reasonable facsimiles, again? Wouldn't that be a step in the rinht direction? And I find myself thinking it would be just as nice if more TV shows approached adult audiences with the aim of elevating grown up tastes, too. We can use it as much as the kids. Ironically, there was a brief filmed commercial during the hour-long program that had Dick give cm what they want) Clark clutching his rock n roll records and implying that if we caught HIS TV show, we would dig the KKAL child's world of music. lr!i-style. You know something? I'm afraid brother Clark is right. Controversial Movie Opens CHICAGO (UPI) The movie, 'Anatomy Of A Murder," oDcned here late Wednesday, delayed but uncut by a week-long hassle with the Chicago Police Censor Board. U. S. District Judge Julius H. Miner overruled a censor board's decision that the movie was im moral and obscene after letting his teen-age son and daughter see the film. The five-woman censor board had objected to the words, "rape" and "contraceptive" and to the phrases "army slut" and "I'm go ing to kick that bitch to kingdom come." It had demanded that they be knocked out before- the movie could be shown. Columbia Pictures and produ cer-director Otto Preminger re fused to delete the scenes. In his ruling. Miner cited the L'. S. Supreme Court's recent ac tion overruling a New York cen sor lioard ban of the movie. "Lddy Chatterly's Lover." "The Supreme Court reaffirmed its decision that in determining whether a particular picture is en titled to protection of expression under the 14th Amendment, the court may exercise its judicial function. .Miner said. Short Shots: Jack Paar report ed that Genevieve is ill and can not apear on his NBC-TV show tonight (Thursday. Itobert Culp gave a believable performance as a no-goodnik actor on ABC-TV's accused, although on one or two occasions he hammed it up. I lis wife, Nancy Asch, was on the same show but was overmatched. The Channel Swim: The Mod ernaires replace the Four Lads on NBC-TVs Saturday night va riety hour. Perry Presents, start ing Aug. 1. That gives the show the following lineup for the rest of the summer: Tony Bennett, Jaye P. Morgan and the Modern aires. The Perry Como replace ment began life on June 13 with Tony, the Lads and Teresa Brewer. Red Skelton will serve as host when CBS-TV reruns the two-hour film classic, "The Wizard of Oz" on Sunday. Dec. 13. Man With a Camera, the Charles Bronson series that faded from ABC-TV last March, returns to the same network in a Monday night slot next fall. "The Blue and the Qray," Henry Steele Commagcr's two-volume work on tne Amen can Civil War, is being developed into a weekly NBC-TV series for the 1U60-61 season. The announce ment that Ernie Kovacs will head a new ABC-TV panel show, Take A Good Look, come the fall means the cigar sponsor's nego tiations with George Burns have ended. Garry Moore assures us that the taping of his Tuesday night CBS-TV show next season will not include censorship. "The tape will be unedited," he says, "so if any mishap occurs, it'll still be there for all to sec. Side Glances II: TJU. f - V t. fat on. Edmund G. Brown Wednes day refused to extradite Bernice Frances Arnold of Albany, Calif., who was wanted in Grants Pass on a swindling charge, i The Oregon charge said Mrs. Arnold allegedly took part in a "pigeon-drop" swindle in Grants Pass April 21. 1959. At a hearing in Brown's office lasti June IB; an overwhelming array of witnesses testified that Mrs. Arnold did not leave the San Francisco Bay area during the time of the alleged swindle. Brown said. He said the only evidence lead ing to the charge against Mrs. Arnold was an old photograph which was shown to the victim in Grants Pass. This identification was doubtful. Brown said, and the entire case so far showed evi dence of mistaken identity. LAS VEGAS. Nev. iL'PH-The confessed slayer of a 5-year-old girl was quoted today as saying he confused the child with his wife, whom he had sent from home alter telling her "I know I'm going to kill somebody." Robert K. Ervin, 21, arrested Wednesday as he stepped off a train from Los Angeles, is ac cused of the rape slaying of Do lores Stafford, a neighlwr child whose nude, slashed body was found in Ervin's attic Monday. "Yes, 1 killed her." Ervin told police. "The little girl came over to my house. I was lying on the couch. She thought 1 was asleep but I wasn't. "I thought she was my wife." The horsemen formed an honor guard and escorted the seven cov ered wagons to the eastern edge of Rupert for Wednesday night's encampment. The Wranglers served fried chicken to the wagoncers and the combined chambers of commerce of Rupert. Burley and Paul pro vided an evening of entertain ment. The Fifty-Niners had breakfast in Burley this morning and head ed westward toward the weekend camp at Twin Falls. His wife, Kathy, 18, told offi cers her husband had a split per sonality and that "he said that ever since he was a little boy a person inside him urged him to do things." She said she had gone home to her parents in Kingman, Ariz., last Saturday after Ervin tried to choke her and then told her: "You better get away. Kathy. I know I'm going to kill some body.'' Mrs. Ervin, who is expecting a child, turned over to police a let ter she received from her hus band from Los Angeles, where he fled after the slaying. It said in part : "Kathy. Kathy. I love you. I'll never know why I did this. I know I'll be put away for a long time, and I'd like to see you be fore then." Police said Ervin denied raping the child, a neighbor who fre quently visited his wife and who apparently went to the Ervin home without knowing Mrs. Er vin was away. Doctors said there was no question, however, that she had been sexually molested. Dolores was one of four chil dren of St. Elmo Stafford, an ex ecutive of the Las Vegas Review Journal, and Mrs. Stafford. The family came here from Fort Smith. Ark., six months ago. Dist. Atty. George Foley said a first degree murder charge would be filed against Ervin today or Friday. Resentment against the 5-foot, 3-inch youth was high in the com munity. Detective Lt. B. J. Hand Ion said he doubted that any mob I violence would be attempted, but ! said an extra jailer had been put on duty and "we'll stop any trou 'ble if it comes, right quick."
