In each case, you don't get to see til) that you think you're entitled to. This certainly was the case Tuesday when NBC-TV carried the 2tth annual All-Star game from Fortes Field in Pittsburgh, which the National League won, 5-4 The one-dimensional approach of the TV cameras is what bugs me. They cai show the pitcher batter confrontation or the fiolt-er-base runner relationship. Hare ly do you see all of it at one time. They've been televising ball games for a dozen years now and nobody has been abk- to solve the problem. I guess the answer is to have a camera in a helicopter over the ballpark. Anyhow, director Many Coyle's Trujillo Tightens Security CIL'DAD TRUJILLO, Dominican Republic iUPIi The Dominican government tightened security measures today against the pos sibility of a terrorist campaign or an armed invasion aimed at over throwing the Trujillo regime. This capital was filled with ru mors of an invasion launched from Cuba through Haiti, of aban doned invasion boats being sighted on beaches, and of arrests of un derground agellts. None could be confirmed but a government spokesman said the armed forces had tightened secu rity measures and were maneuv ring around Santiago, second lar gest Dominican city. Political observers familiar with the situation said there was an extremely high possibility that a campaign of terrorism would be the next step in the Caribbean war of nerves, particularly in view of the success of Fidel Cas tro's similar operations during his revolution in Cuba. Informed sources said there were three explosions in public places in Diudad Trujillo Saturday night. The government explained only one of them. Dominican authorities said they felt well able to cope with any terrorist campaign because the government has the support of the people. The navy and air forco were maintaining around-the-clock pa trols of the coast but most ob servers expect any invasion would be launched across the border from Haiti, which shares this Caribbean island with the Domini can Republic. ' camera crew Tuesday showed viewers as much as possible. They used two cameras behind home plate one almost on the field, the other in the stands. An other camera was located over the center field wall and it could zoom in on the pitcher-batter-catcher scene. If a base runner was on secon:! when the center field camera was in use, you could see him jump ing uround the base paths. But base runners on first and third were lost to the TV audience dur ing pilches. This left me feeling something like a horse with blind ers on. Announcers Mel Allen and Curt (iowdy seemed to be trying very hard to avoid cliches and mala propisms and, in general, they succeeded. I caught only one slip: When Gowdy referred to a play er as "the ex-great Yankee." Both Allen and Gowdy were stuck on wrists. Allen spoke of short stop Krnie Banks' "powerful wrists" and a few innings later Gowdy called attention to out fielder Hank Anions' "tremendous wrists." Both players looked thin. I counted 15 razor blade or pen commercials during the 2-hour, 35 minute game, an average of one every 10 minutes or so. Somc commercials were four minutes apart, others 20 minutes apart.) I know it may have seemed like more, but that's not bad at all, considering the com mercials used uo less than 10 minutes, according to my watch. YOUNG ACTOR MA Y SA VE' AMERICAN MALE IN FILM This log li made up from information by Television Stations and its accuracy cannot be guaranteed by the La Crtnde Evening Observer. HOLLYWOOD tUPD Don't give up hope men, there's a chance we may yet be portrayed in TV and film stories as something oth er than psychoneurotics or gun- slinging goons. There is a happy medium some place, and young I2V) Gardner McKay, who is starring in a new video series, thinks he's found it. McKay, a newcomer who looks like a cross between Clark Gable and Tyrone Power, plays a schooner skipper in "Adventures in Paradise," patterned after James Michener's famed stories of the South Pacific. The guy's not only handsome, he's a departure from the "I've got bit problems" actors who must commune with their psychiatrists before kissing the leading lady. Additionally, Gardner is a he-man off-screen. Tired of Neurotics "The public is tiring of neurotic heroes," he said during lunch at 20th Century-Fox Studios, where the series is being filmed. 'A hero's problems should be real, not psychological. And if you ask me, the same thing goes for actors. Sure, I have a littl of the poet in me every man does. I think Errol Flynn and Gregory Peck managed to combine artistic qualities and manhood very well. 'To be successful an actor should be a man first, a perform er second." The 6-foot 5-inch 200-pounder has been a writer, painter, photog rapher, professional skipper and sculptor. In his free time he plays basketball, boxes, and is a nut on skin-diving and fishing. "Before I became an actor I never met a performer I liked," Gardner went on. "Now that I'm acting myself I find that some insurance companies won't even insure an actor's car. That's the reputation they have. Big Budget Provided "Sometimes when I'm down on the docks with other men and. they ask me what 1 do for a liv ing I frequently don't admit I'm an actor. There's too much con troversy and explanation sur rounding the prolession." The studio is spending $110,000 per hour-long sequence for "Ad ventures in Paradise" as much as B pictures cost a few years back. And McKay's leading ladies in clude Anna Kashfi, Diana Lynn; Pat Medina, Julie London and Joan Collins. He'll be paid more than $100,000 a year for his role in the adventure series, which starts Oct. 5 on ABC-TV. "I don't mean to knock 'meth od' actors," he said, "and I think a man can cry under certain cir cumstances. But I'd rather have him overcome it and prove his virility. "Men like Gary Cooper, Jim- my Stewart and John Wayne are still going strong simply because there's nobody to replace them. They stand up straight and be have like men." The trip was being made at the invitation of the U.S. State Department and will include meetings with industrial and trade union leaders.
