Observer, La Grande, Ore., Fri., July 3, 1959 Page 9 Drop Off Department Says Farm Crop Surplus Losses WASHINGTON L1'I The Agriculture Department reported today that its losses on surplus (arm crops have dropped in the past year because sales (ell off. The department said it lost 702 million dollars during the 11 month period that ended May 31. It lost 900 million dollars in the same period last year. The department said declining sales of surpluses were respon sible. Since the government nor mally s.lls the surpluses for less than it paid fur them in price , supports, the less sold the less lost. The department said its invest ment in price-supported wheat, corn, cotton, and other surplus farm commodities totaled $8,805, 986,000 on May 31. This compares with $7,164,406,000 one year ago. The new total included $6,105, 222.000 in commodities owned out right by the Commodity Credit Corp. and $2,700,764,01)0 in out standing loans on (arm products still held by producers. Wheat still was the most costly surplus crop. The government owned 1,146,972,481 bushels worth $2,925,804,858. Loans on another 87.522.466 bushels were valued at ,$159,632,458. WASHINGTON l'PI - The Agriculture Department said to day that feed prices regained in June some o( the losses they suf (ered in May. Average feedstuff prices at the end of June were about $1 per ton higher than a month earlier. However, they were $3 a ton low er than in June, 1958. WASHINGTON (CPIi The Agriculture Department said to day a comprehensive search (or hoja blanca, a destructive disease Fireworks Blast Kills Children KALISPELL, Mont. (L'PIi Two children were killed Thurs day in the explosion of a (ire works stand they were tending. The victims wwre Dickie Street, 13, and Linda Hclseth, 10. The stand was in front of a service station owned by the boy's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Durocher, at Evergreen just east of Kalis pell. Witnesses said a series of blasts destroyed the stand. The badly burned bodies o( the children were found on the floor, near an unlocked wooden door. Coroner Sol Catron said the stand contained "the usual sup ply" of Fourth o( July fireworks, which are legal in Montana. Reed Receives $250,000 Grant PORTLAND UPI Reed Col lege here has received a $250,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foun dation, one of the largest grants in the history of the school. Richard L. Sullivan, president of Reed, said $180,000 will be used (or completion of the biology wing now under construction, and (or remodeling and additions to the chemical building. The balance o( the grant will be used over a period o( years (or biological research. The Rocke(eller Foundation has usually (ocused on graduate col leges and health and science re search making the large grant to Reed an extraordinary recogni tion.
