If the Council's deadly predic tion cones true, it would far sur-pa-s the previous record for a two day July 4th weekend a iraik of 2T1 set in 1953. The all-time fatality record for a two-day holiday was set during the 'Hlack Christmas" weekend of when 392 poisons died , The Council's forecast was based on an estimate that 45 mil lion cars five million more than for a non-holiday weekend would flood the nation's highways over the Independence Day holiday. Added to the 350 dead would be I3,0(i0 persons disabled, includ ing many whose injuries would eventually bring their deaths, the Coi itcil estimated. "If the death rate could be cut over the holiday period by 20 per cent, 70 lives could be saved and 2.5o fewer people suffer disa bling injuries." a Council spokes man said. The Council issued three life saving rules for holiday motor ists: 1. Don't let ill temper overrule judgment. 2. Obey all traffic laws. 3. Drink or drive but don't do both. I NEW YORK 'VPI Garry Moore and his CBS-TV crew, all of whom embarked on a hiatus Tuesday nijht (in TV no one takes a vacation a hiatus is considered much classier , can lay claim to one title: mast im proved nev show of the past sea son. The Moore hour started some what uncertainly last fall, but utt er a switch in production brains, its inr.ards began to congeal. Per haps more important, the show hewed out an identity of its own. one that might best be desrrilied as champagne in a beer glass. Tuesday night's closer managed to homogenize some fairly sophis ticated material in a solution of shoes-off hominess and it did it artfully. The hour opened with a repeat of its medieval pageantrv number, a charming slice of taf- ...sit down to a real Western treat Hamburgers ... all YC an eat! IdAUXACHO rjODO-i fy: went on to a really complex arrangement of "It's All Right With Mo," upnfortunately mishan dled by singer Vic Damone; of fered the Mello-Larks and some of the Moore cast in a delight fully wacky roundelay; and capped this with a really rousing hula hoop dance. The hoop dance was snafued a bit by the accidental spilling of a plate of hot dogs on the dance area, but in a way, this sort of typified the whole air of the Moore show a sprawl of frank furters among a thicket of ballet slippers. Next season, Moore will return with a slight shift in emphasis: His hour will gun for more hu mor and it will shift from a live show to a taped one. More hu mor, I welcome. Tape. I dunno. Tape will make it possible to ring in guests who otherwise could not appear at night, but it also will make it possible to erase boo boos. That means no more hot dogs on the dance floor. And frankly, I shall miss them. Short Shots: The NBC-TV Jim mic Rodgers Show seems a little confused about its own character. It started out as a show pitched at the teen-age set and is now in a rather muddled state some where between Pablum and Geri tol. Tuesday night's guests, for example, were Carmel Quinn and Tedi Thurman, the girl who docs the sexy weather reports on NBC's Monitor, a rather weird new approach in bookings. When star Ronald Reagan opened Tuesday night's CBS-TV Spotlight Playhouse with: "There was one word for our situation desperate!" It turned out he was talking about being surrounded by Irdians. For one wild moment, I thought he was talking about sum mer TV. The Channel Swim: "The Rival ry," a play about the Lincoln Douglas debates which was seen this past season on Broadway, is under consideration by CBS-TV as a special for next season. Pat Carroll, recently dropped from the panel of CBS-TV's Keep Talk ing, returns to the show July 8 to July 2D. There's a report floating around that NBC-TV's Jack Paar is drop ping his friend of some IB years. Chris Carroll, from his backstage staff Carroll hooks in many of the feature acts seen on the show. Jack Benny will do three specials for CBS-TV next season. Tuesday Weld, the young ac tress recently described by Dan ny Kaye as "15. going on 27," has been signed in for "Secret Is land." an episode scheduled for ABC-TV's 77 Sunset Strip next semester. Carl Reiner will check out. of the emcee job on CBS-TV's Keep Talking after July 15 to make a movie Vincent Price w ill spell him on July 22. DISCOVERER TOO SLOW INGLEWOOD. Calif.
