Jury Launches
Swindle Probe
In Centennial

ed a probe today into an alleged

swindle. :
Deputy Multnomah county Dis
trict Attorney Oscar Ilowlett said
the alleged swindle involved paid
advertising in an Oregon Centen
nial souvenir publication that ap
parently was never printed.
First of the 40 to 60 witnesses
expected to be called were form
er Gov. Robert D. Holmes and
Anthony Brandclthaler, chairman
of the Oregon Centennial Commis
sion. . c
Ilowlett said Holmes was asked
to testify in regard to efforts by
a pair of promotors to get him
to sanction the proposed publica
tion. Holmes declined and turned
the matter over to the Centennial
commission. Brandenthalcr said
the commission turned down the
proposal and would not permit the
promotors to use the word Cen
tennial or the official Exposition
seal in connection with it.
The district attorney's office re
ceived the case from U. S. Postal
authorities.
Also expected to be called to
testify was Robert H. Blyth, Port
land Better Business Bureau man
ager. He said a number of com
plaints were filed by businessmen
who said they made payments
ranging from $5 to $750 for ad
vertisements in the proposed sou
venir booklet but got nothing for
their money.
NUDIST BUSINESS BOOMS

ed his retreat from 5 to 50 acres
because of increased business.

"All she thinks about is parties,
dresses and dates," wailed Bess,
adding that Jane couldn't cook or
sew either. (Frankly, 1 couldn't
understand what all the fuss was
about because Jane seemed ideal
ly prepared for marriage).
Anyway, the episode wound up
with Bess breaking the news to
Jane that her Uncle George was
dead and Jane cried: "But it's so
horrible!"
And you know, she was right.
Short Shots: The underwater
fantasy on the NBC-TV Arthur
Murray Party Monday night was
well-conceived and well-executed
by the: Baird i Marionettes. The
piece might have been really
charming if the pivotal human in
the sequence had been a perform
er . with a feeling for line and
movement instead of the earth
bound Kathryn Murray.
' I counted 12 reruns in prime
time on the three networks Mon
day night and it's only the begin
ning of summer. Obviously, it's
time for everyone to put their
eyeballs in mothballs.

Isolated Island
Solidly Against
Hawaii Statehood
HONOLULU (UPI ) The tiny,
isolated island of Niihau was
heard from Monday and its resi
dents showed conclusively that
not everybody in the Hawaiian
Islands wants statehood.
The island's 88 votes cast
Saturday arrived at the county
seat Monday by slow boat. They
were four to one against all three
proposals on the statehood ballot.
The island is privately-owned
and populated almost entirely by
pure Hawaiians. They not only
rejected statehood, but abstained
from voting for any federal of
fices. The comparative handful of
votes always stubbornly and un
animously Republican will do lit
tle to change the general opinion
of Hawaii about statehood.
The final count in Saturday's
plebiscite gave statehood . the
"yes" margin by almost 18 to 1.
Convict Released
After 23 Years
PORTLAND (UPll Geither
Horn, a transient who has served
23 years of a life term in the
Washington Slate prison for mur
der, was ordered released Mon
day by Federal Judge Gits J. Sol
omon here.
Horn made application for a
writ of habeas corpus and Judge
Solomon heard the petition June
17 at Pasco, Wash. The jiKlge
ruled Monday that the prisoner
had been deprived of due process
of law under the 14th amendment
of the Constitution.
Horn was tried and convicted of
the murder in November, 1935, of
another transient, never identi
tied, near Pasco. He charged in
his petition for a writ that his
confession to the crime had been
obtained by coercion and that the
state had not furnished him with
an attorney.

the new U.S. ambassador to Is
rael, left Sunday night to take up
his new post. Reid, former presi
dent and editor of the New York
Herald Tribune, said he would
present his credentials to Israeli
President Itzak Ben-Zvi on July 2.
