Observer, La Grande, Ore., Thurs., June 11, 1959. Page 11 WILLIAM EWALD Circle Theatre Unravels Entertaining NEW YORK (UPI) CBS-TV's Armstrong Circle Theatre unrav eled a junior-sealed, but fairly ef fective drama Wednesday night in "The Monkey Ride." Circle Theatre never sticks its neck out very far, but within its limits it turns out moderately en: grossing hour plays. Wednesday night's piece a study of a young couple glued up on benzedrine showed several fissures; some ar chaic hip talk ("That'll be- real groovy"), a lack of much motiva tion in its hooked couple, a rather limp finish. But despite this, "The Monkey Ride" had a chunkful of entries on the credit side: It moved with some celerity, it managed To channel out the agony of the ad dict with a minimum of wall scratching, and it milked some semi-useful sounds from a back drop jazz group that included Charlie Shavers and Jo Jones. I should also list among its as sets its performances. Among the lead tenants were Si Oakland, Conrad Janis, Val Avery and a young lady, Susan Oliver, who has the sort of shine that should jump her into the major leagues. Short Shots: ABC-TV's Music for a Summer Night churned out another reasonably diverting hour Wednesday night with tunes by Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Har old Allen and Victor Herbert. One aside, however: When I watch a couple batting out "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" as on Wednes day night's show, I find it almost unbearably funny I suppose it's a hangover from those wonder , fully unintentional comic duets between Nelson Eddy and Jean ette MncDonald in the movies of the 1930's. i NBC-TV's Jack Paar witji Dave Garroway, Elaine May and Mike Nichols, and Nina Foch'on board turned out one of- his most pleasant low-key excursions in recent' weeks. Garroway is the kind of guy TV should keep on ELGIN BRIEFS Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Cook of- North Platte, Neb., were Sunday guests of their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schwebke of Im blcr.
