Indonesian Tour While By PHIL NEWSOM , UPI Staff Writer Man-of-the-week: President Su karno of Indonesia. The place: Hollywood. The quote: (From a spokesman for Sukarno) "If it were a criti cal situation the president would have stayed home." Observers in Jakarta, Indone sia's capital, were saying this week that Sukarno had suffered his greatest political defeat. The army had banned all political ac tivity, and Sukarno's bid for near dictatorial powers had come a cropper in the face of stonewall Moslem opposition. Jakarta reports said the army mntrA1 in . . iu. m pi event uic uuuuii plunging into chaos. So, if the situation were not critical, it could do as one until a better and more critical situa tion came along. ' But of all this Sukarno himself gave no sign. He showed no indications of hur rying home. . t At the core of the difficulty was Sukarno's demand for crea tion of a five-year cabinet, with himself at the head, which would rule Indonesia "without interfer ence of opposition as conceived by the system of liberal democ racy." It would be the first step in his concept of "guided democracy" for Indonesia, a socialistic con cept eliminating capitalism. , It received strong support from Indonesian Communists who would participate in the new gov ernment on a basis of equality and who oould hope , from this stepping stone eventually to take over the government. Moslem opposition arose not so much from a dislike of the "guid ed democracy" plan as from Su karno's refusal to assure them in advance of a prominent place in the new government. But as a successful revolution ary in his own right, Sukarno has expressed open admiration for the accomplishments of Soviet Russia and has paid tribute to Soviet leaders for helping to shape his ideas for a "working cabinet" which would "guide the people and channel their ideas to achieve their needs and desires." Sukarno, 58 years old on June 7, spent 12 of those years either in jail or exile. He is the son of a Javanese father and a Balinese mother. The father saw to it he got an education, culminating in a doc torate in engineering. Collaborated With Japanese But even before he obtained his degree, he already was an experi enced and eloquent revolutionary against the Dutch who had held the East Indies for 100 years. He collaborated with the Japa nese during World War II but at the same time kept in touch with the Indonesian underground. In 1949 he took over as head of an independent Indonesian govern ment with sway over 80 million people on 3.000 islands. As a revolutionary he was phe nomenal. Monday as he watched a bulldozer drag a stump from a flood control project near here. "Blood tp u r t e d from his mouth," said Charles Griffiths, who was sitting on the bulldozer. "He fell over dead. He didn't say a word." Anderson County Sheriff Glad Woodward said he did not think that the killing was another inci dent in the sporadic outbursts of violence in the East Tennessee coal fields. But Bureau of Identi fication agents started the inves tigation under a blanket request issued by Atty. Gen. J. H. Under the final rules the buck deer season will run from Oct. 3 through Oct. 23. The elk season will extend from Oct. 31 through Nov. 11 along the Coast range and from Oct. 31 through Nov. 22 on the Cascade and eastern Oregon elk ranges. ' The antelope season was set to run from Aug. 15-19. In one of the two changes, archers were given an additional week of hunting in several areas. These include the Wasco, ' Mt. Emily, Starkey, Baker and Keat ing game management units and the Keno area where the season runs from Sept. 5 through Sept. 27, The other change from the ten tative rules was lopping the ex tended weekend of hunting off thc Applegato and Evans Creek deer management units. The season in these units for eithcr-scx deer on a permit basis runs from Oct. 17 through Oct. 25, the same dates set for most of the other deer management units. All other tentative proposals were retained by the Commission and adopted as final rules for the 1959 seasons. A complete hunting synopsis will be available to the public shortly after mid-June, the Commission said. Hunters were urged to be on the alert for news releases per taining to filing for special tags ana permits. Dear Ann Landers: Perhaps I should be ashamed to write about a petty annoyance when so many people have real problems, but a close friend is driving me cuckoo. She never has a cold it's nlways Jiurus." A headache is cut of the question. Hers must be a "migrane." Stomach ache never! Either she has "intestinal flu or "food poisoning from a bad lob ster." Other people may turn an nnkle but she always managers to 'tear a ligament." Every skin blemish is an "allergy." v The final straw came Sunday night when she had too many mar tinis and fell down a short flight of stairs. Naturally, she wasn t crocked she had a touch of "ver tigo narcolepsy." Why is she like this and what can I do about it? Irritated. Dear Irritated: Inadequate people exaggerate and dress up their symptoms because it at tracts more attention. The poor thing must work her little ill nesses and discomforts for all they're worth. There's nothing you can do about it so give her the "ear-to-ear treatment" in ono and out the other. to visit a friend, he's right there. It's all right for people who are (55, to live like this, but I can't stand it. I feel 80 years old. Please tell me what to do before I go off my rocker. A man 47, in good health, who's been accus tomed to working every day, makes a big mistake when he quits cold .and settles in his rocking chair to vegetate for the rest of his life.
