500 Mile Pilots Get Warning By ED SAINSBURY ; . UPI Staff Writer ,'" INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. l'PI -Speedway drivers get a final word qf caution today in the last pre liminary before Saturday's 43rd annual 500 mile dash against death in an effort to prevent the chase from adding a 51st victim to the track fatality list. .'.There will lie no cars running on the 2'i mile oval track today and all drivers with their pit crews must show up at 1 p.m. c.d.t. to get a lecture on racing hilcs from chief steward Harlan Fengler. Fengler said he'd be sliffer than ever in his annual lecture to warn the pilots that driving regulations fcould be strictly enforced ar.d that violations might cost victory, which would mean about half of total purse of a record S300, plus j Pace Lap Tricks Particularly he'll warn against ricks on the pace lap and the lap of the race in an effort prevent any repetition of last year's debacle in which Ihe first Standings Major League Standings United Press International National Milwaukee ban Francisco 'fttsburgh .os Angeles .'hicago Cincinnati VL Louis Philadelphia 'w Thursday s Results ittsburgh 3 Milwaukee 0 Kan Francisco 5 St. Louis 4 'hlladelphia 4 Cincinnati 3, night 'hicago 7 Los Angeles 5, night ij American League W L Pet. The goof was blamed partially in some quarters Yor the first lap crack-up. involving' 15 cars, in which Pat O'Connor was killed. , The chances were against an other . mixup since last year's starting formula was dropped and this time the 11 rows of 3 cars each will make a parade lap in their proper alignment and then will turn the pace lap be hind the pace car before the race begins. Weather .Outlook Favorable Other than the drivers' meeting there was no activity scheduled on the track. Instead the asphalt and brick surface 'was slated for a final sweeping down to eliminate- all debris that might inter fere with the near 200 mile pe: hour speeds some pilots will hit on the long stretches, and pit crews might get brief warmups on procedures. The weather outlook was favor able, although the temperature might soar into the high go's be fore the finish. Though showers y.ere expected, forecasters antici pated they would hold off until after the race, and clouds were expected to cut the heat from the sun on Uie pilots. Spring food production is far below normal, and in the absence of rain during late May and June to give a boost to shrub and grass growth, critical conditions can be expected oh many ranges next winter. Forage measurements during (he year indicate above normal pro duction lust year, which was used heavily by both livestock and game last fall. In addition,, big game use of preferred .plants during the winter was also heavy despite a mild, open s.ason. McKean mentioned that for all practical purposes the remainder of last year's production will fur nish little in the way of palatable food this coming winter. Pro duction Uiis spring and summer determine whether the herds re main healthy and well fed during the cold months. EVININO OISEIVEI . Buck Buchanan Observer, La Grande, Ore., Fri., May 29, 1959 Page 2; Oriole's Hoyt Wilhelm Wins Seventh Straight By MILTON RICHMAN , UPI Staff Writer Gentlemen, we give you Hoyt Wilhelm except that Paul Rich ards says he can't be bad "even for a million dollars." Money isn't everything and right now Wilhelm is to the pennant-minded Baltimore Orioles. No wonder! The - 35-year-old knucideballer has won seven straight without a loss. He has a spectacular 1.12 earned run average, the capacity to pitch every third day if neces sary, and the confidence that no one can hit him when he's right. Wilhelm's latest effort was a 5-0 victory over the Yankees Thursday night. The triumph boosted Baltimore to within l'i games of first place in the Ameri can League and extended Wil helm's streak against the Yanks to 21 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings. There comes a time," said the elated Richards after - the game, "when a player is worth more money to a ball club than anyone could possibly'', pay lor him. I wouldn't consider one mil lion dollars for Wilhelm." '-. Beats Yanks Fourth Time - Given a chance ur start by Richards,, the veteran National League castoff has now beaten the Yankees four straight times. During that span, he has allowed the world champions a total of two runs while pitching a no-hitter and a one-hitter against them. Ralph Terry, obtained from Kansas City earlier in the week, faced Wilhelm Thursday night and hurled well although charged with his fifth defeat. The Orioles nicked him for three runs in four hits during the first seven innings, then picked up their final runs when Gene Woodling hit a two- run homer off reliever ' Bobby NOW THRU SAT. ' 5 Contender Values, 34, is fovorei at 9-5 to beat Johnson, 24, and win his first real comeback test since being stopped by Charley Powell, March 4. Six-foot-three Nino is favored over six-foot Johnson 1ecause he is a contender, ranked scth by the Ring Magazire and eighth by the NBA. Also because of his greater experience and punch. In the National League, Bob Friend Of Pittsburgh blanked Mil waukee, 3-0: San Francisco climbed to within two games of the first-place Braves by beating St. touis, 5-4; Philadelphia nipped Cincinnati, 4-3, and Chicago licked Los Angeles, 7-a. Knuckteballer Beats Tribe Southpaw Bud Daley, another knuckleballer who got a, chance to start this year, pitched the A's to their win over the Indians. Daley scattered 10 hits and drove in three runs as he posted his third victory. Bill.Tuttle collected four of KC's 14 hits, including a homer. Rocky Colavito hit his 13th for Cleveland. Jim .Wildcat i Grant Was the loser. Vic Wertz' two-run homer in the eighth inning along with Frank Sullivan's two-hit pitching enabled the Red Sox to down the Sen ators. The only run Washington scored was unearned, but Sullivan had no kick coming because all three Boston runs off loser Pedro Ramos also resulted from errors. The- worm finally turned for Friend, loser of his first seven games, as he posted his first vic tory of the season with a fine four-hit shutout over the Braves. The Pirates scored all their runs off Joey Jay in the fifth inning.
