United Press International,
NEW YORK (UPIO Johnny
Unitas, a former six-dollar-fl-game
sand-lotter, won. $10,000 today, an
automobile and a permanent place
in the hearts of Baltimore fans
for leading the Colts to their first
National League title on one leg.
The Colts won the championship
in their first title appearance fol
lowing nine years of frustrating
failure in two leagues. In order to
db it, they had to set up the first
"sudden death" overtime in NFL
domitable New York Giants, 23-17
history and. then conquer the in
as dusk closed over Yankee Sta
dium Sunday.
This sports drama, a series of
plays so , fantastic no director
would dare film them as the plot
of a make-believe story, unfolded
b6fore 64,185 fans plus hundreds
of thousands of TV and radio root
era. Unites, a quarterback every
one now is comparing with Sam
my Baugh and Otto Graham, was
the key to victory bad leg and
all but a herd of other Colts also
starred, in .the slory:book finish.
'There was Stove Myhra, whose
20-yard field goal with seven sec
onds to go jn the regulation game
sent it intq overtime. And Alan
Ameche, the fullback "whose one
yard scoring blast ended the most
successful and incredible of NFL
campaigns. . .
How could anyonp overlook Ray
Kerry, the Texan who wears con
tact lenses on his eyes and a
brace on his back because one leg
is shorter than the other? He set
pass receiving reeord.s of 12 catch
es and, 178 yards for a title game.
.Then there was .Baltimore's
magnificent defensive line, headed
by Gino Marehelli. ..That line
forced New York to give up the
ball and set the stage for Myh
ra's field goal with seven seconds
left. Marchetti was injured help
ing make the crucial tackle that
kept Frank Gifford from making
a first dowm With Marchetti lying
iir the dressing room, that line
foVced. the Giants to. punt again
ill the overtime to set the stage;
f victory. j
'.The Giants won the toss to re
ceive the kickoff in the overtime.
All " they needed to win was to
keep the ball and score in any
fashion. The Colts had only one
idea in their huddle before this
final kickoff. Maybe it was corny,
but they said, "Let's win this one
for Gino." '
Baltimore immediately; forced
tfle Giants to punt. Unitas, , Ame
che, Berry and L. G. Dupre went
to;-work on their 20. Dick Mod
zelewski,. New York's tank-like
tackle,, halted the drive momen
tarily when he bolted through and
dumped Unitas for an eieht-vard
loss on the Baltimore 36. But Uni
tas fired 21 yards to Berry on the
New York 43 and baited a trap
for Mpdzelewski,, When he fell for
it and came barreling through on
the. next play he left a big hole
and Ameche ran 23 yards to the
new 20.
Unitas, who played sandlot foot
ball for $6 a game after he was
released by the Pittsburgh. Stcel
ers in 1055, was hobbling on a
right leg injured earlier in the
game but his head was clear and
he still was the gambling signal
caller who now makes more than
$1,000 a game. Instead of playing
conservative football and sticking
to- rushes, he fired to Berry on
the eight. Then he bulleted one
to' Jim Mutscheller in the right
corner on the one. Mutscheller
and George Preas then opened a
big hole at right tackle and Ame
che rammed over to win the
thriller.
Unitas set a. record of 340 yards
gained on passes in a title game,
bettering the former mark of 335
sQt by Baugh of' the Washington
Redskins against the Chicago
Bears in the 1937 championship
contest. ' Unitas' tosses to Berry,

CORVALLIS, Ore. (UPI) -
Iowa's Hawk-eyes took the favor
ites role here today at the third
annual Far West Classic. .
The Hawkeyes meet pre-tour-ney
favorite Oregon Stale, twice
past winner of the tournament,
in the ' championship game at
9:30 p.m. p.s.t.
Veteran hoop experts in this
basketball minded town are giv
ing the edge to Iowa mainly because-of
6.5 Dave Gunther who
poured 36 points through the
hoop in beating Woyming, 82-75,
in first round play. Oregon State
slipped past Air Force, 49-47, on
Jim , Woodland's last ditch shot
with five seconds remaining. , ,
Guntlier's 36-point total set a
new single game record surpass
ing the 35 points by Dave Gam
bee of Oregon State last year
against Yale. Gunther needs only
21 points to set a two-game rec
ord; The old mark is held by
Bruno Boin of Washington who
had 56 points last year. ,
Still Oregon Stale has to be con
sidered a prime threat for .the
title. Slats Gill, Beaver mentor,
is. famous for his canny ability
to defense a team and come up
with something just a little bit
different - each night.
