themselves and their contempo

Expose old Cramps to little
grandchildren and he -resorts at
onco to bribery.
The bribery is to arouse in the
little tykes an idolatrous affection
and to . convince them that
Cramps is the world's greatest
man, likely, next time around, to
be nominated by both political
parties for president. -
That is not a far fetched con

panied by the neighbor kids, of
course. Tho.. neighbor, kids know
that InvK nmi enndv are about to
be served up and that they will
get their share.
"Grampaw!" the ' little ones
Chorus confidently as they as
semble around Cramps' car.
Hopefully they scan the interior
for packages and con the old
hian's pockets for any promising
pulgo. If the car lacks packages
and there arc no obvious bulges
in gramp's pocket, the little ones
will try again.
There will be in their voices
this time, however, an accusing
note, a downward, hopeless inflec
tion as they sound off. This sign
fies anxiety and doubt as they get
to die point:
"Grampaw, ' what did you
brought us'.'" . i;
That cues tlieir mother, if she

For Cramps, however, the cue is
to go into his magician act. He
planned it that way. When the
little kids almost have abandoned
hope, old Cramps unlocks the
trunk of his car and, presto, the
loot is there.
"Hey, Cramps," hollers
Barry, "did you brought us any
toys?" Barry's mother shushes
him some more. All the kids are
squealing by now and the neigh
bor kids arc opening packages.
A small riot ensues. From this
riot, three - year - old Connie
emerges victor. Connie wins be
cause she has no inhibition
against seizing anything she can
